Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 13, 1913.
Patented Oct. 2'7, 1914. Serial No. 794,976.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FnANcIs M. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Raymond, in the county of Pacific and State of Washington, have invented a new and useful Snatch-Block, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relatesto improve ments in snatch blocks, one object of the invention being the provision of a snatch block, in which the members thereof, which journal the pulley or sheave, are relatively movable with relation to each other to per mit of the placing of the cable thereupon without threading the same through the block, and also by means of which the haul ing cable may be positioned upon the connecting bail without threading therethrough.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description roceeds, the invention resides in the comination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter clescribed and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the inventionherein disclosed can be made Within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings-Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete block made according to and embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the complete block. Figs. 5 and 6 are detail views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates one plate or section of the block, which is provided with the bridging or head member 2, which by means of the pin 3 has pivotedthereto, the hauling cable receiving yoke or bail 4, the free end of said bail being provided with the shouldered head 5, the purpose of which will presently appear. he bridging member 2 as at 6, is provided with the reduced portion 7, terminating in the elongated head 8, the portions 7 and 8 of the bridging member 6 in cross section being T shaped.
A stud 9 is secured by riveting to the member 1, and carries the limiting disk 10 and the shaft 11 for the reception of the sheave or pulley 12. Upon each side of the sheave or pulley 12 is provided an annular shoulder 13-15, which fit respectively into the recessed portions 14.- and 16 formed in the inner face of the respective members 1 and 21 of the block.
The disk 17, which corresponds to the disk 10 fits into the recess formed by the rim 15 of the sheave or pulley-12, and is carried by the stud or pin 18, which is rotatably mounted in the block member or plate 21 and is provided with the cross head 19, which is shaped to be disposed through the elongated opening 20 of the member 21 when it is desired to remove the disk 17. By this means, the pulley or sheave 12 is properly positioned in place and the members 1 and 21 are connected by the pins 11 and 18 so that such members may be permitted independent swinging movement with the pins 11 and 18 as the axis. The upper reduced end 21 of the member 21 is provided with a T-shaped in cross section slot 22 for the reception of the heads 7-8 of the bridging members 6, so that the members may be permitted the necessary independent movement to permit of the separation of the bridging member 6 from the end 21 of the member 21, and consequently the introduction of a cable upon the sheave or pulley 12 between the members without disconnecting the shafts 11 and 18 thereof.
In the upper end of the reduced end 21,
of the member 21, is provided the T-shaped in cross section slot 23, for the reception of the cross head 5 of the bail 4, the movement independently of the member 1, permitting the release of the cross head 5 of the bail 4-, simultaneously with the release of the bridging member 6 therefrom. By this means the bail 4 may be swung upon its pivot 3, andthe supporting cable for the snatch block placed therein without the necessity of threading the end therethrough as is the usual practice. In order to hold the parts locked, when the cable is threaded through the block and the bail 4, the slot 24 is provided for the reception of the bent end of the spring 25 which extends across the slot 23 and thus locks the cross head 5 of the bail 4 against movement.
The recess or slot 22 of the member 21, is formed on a curve, and such curve is concentric with the shafts 11 and 18, so that when the member 21 is swung or oscillated with the shafts 11 and 18 as the center, the head. of the bridging member 6 will be moved into and out of the slot 22, as will also the cross head 5 of the bail 4. It will thus be seen that a cable may be readily placed upon the pulley or sheave 12, without being threaded therethrough, it being simply necessary to separate the member 21 to cause it to assume the dotted line position in Fig. 1, and at the same time, the bail l having its cross head released so that the hauling cable may be placed thereon without the necessity of threading the end therethrough.
What is claimed is:
A snatch block, comprising two plates, one of which carries a journaling pintle while the other of which is provided with an aperture having oppositely extending recessed portions, the head of the journaling pintlebeing shaped to fit therethrough, whereby when the apertured plate is placed at varying positions, the plate is locked in can be removed from the pintle, a pivoted bail attached to one end of one plate, the other plate being provided with a reinforced end having a transversed slot to receive the free end of the bail as such plate is swung upon the pintle, said recessed plate being provided with a T-shaped recess opening to the inner wall thereof, and a T-shaped head opening to the inner face of the other plate for sliding engagement with the 'i"-shaped recess to lock the plate against outward displacement.
In testimony that I claim. the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
