Be it known that I, F REDoLE J. PETERSON, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing at Salem, inthe county of Columbiana and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Detachable Hinges, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in detachable hinge designed to be employed wherein it is desirable to frequently separate or detach the hinge members for any desired purpose, as for instance the removal of the leaves from a credit cabinet; and the objects of my improvement are, first, to provide a simple structure, and second, to provide a structure, easily operated and convenient for the purpose designed. These objects and advantages together with otherv objects readily apparent to those skilledfin the art, I attain by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, although my invention ma-y be embodied in a variety of other mechanical forms, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.

In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the hinged members detached froml each other. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the lower hinged member shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of said lower hinged mem` ber. Fig. 4 is a perspectiverview showing the hinged members connected together. Fig. 5 is al sectional view of the upper hinged member and its connecting plate showing an element connected to saidhinge member. f

In. the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the relatively fixed hinged member or leaf and 2 the movable hinged member or leaf; to which hinged member or leaf is attached the swinging element 3 which so far as the presentv invention is concerned may be a credit account leaf or it may be any other article, such as a door or cover. It is well understood that leaf hinges are provided with connecting knuckles which are connected together by means of what is commonly known as hinge pins or pintles. I have illustrated a single form of hinge, one member provided with two connecting knuckles and the other member with one;

In the present instance I employ what might be termed a yoke to couple the hinge members or knuckles together, which yoke consists ofl the coupling or pintle portion 5, the retaining or holdingport-ion 6 and the handle or knoby portion 7, all preferably made of a single piece. 1

In Fig. 3 'I have illustrated the yoke placed in the position to couple the hinge members together or in the same position illustrated in' Fig-4, which figure shows the hingemembers coupled together. When it is desired to detachVV the hinge members for any purpose, the yoke proper is moved longitudinally'a suflicient distance to entirely remove the pintle portion 5, so as to detach said pi'ntle portion from the connecting knuckle 8 formed upon the hinge --member 2, at which time the hinge member 2 is free to be lifted from the hinge member 1 and detached therefrom. In order to prevent the yoke from becoming entirelyl detached at any `time the retainingl or holding portion 6 is provided with the head 9, which head may be formed by swaging the end of the retaining or holding portion 6, but the particular manner of forming the head 9 is immaterialythe only object is to form the head so as to limit the movement of the yoke in one direction by means of the head 9 coming in contact with the shoulder 10, which shoulder separates the bores 3 and 4. It will be understood that the movements of the yoke proper are so limited that the pintle portion never becomes detached from the hinge member l so that whenV the hinge member 2 is placed in position to couple the two hinge members together, the pintle portion is in position to be passed through Vthe aperture formed in the knuckle 8, by which arrangement the hinge members may be quickly coupled together and also easily detached from each other for any purpose.

In Fig. 5 I have illustrated the hinge member 2 connected to the swinging element 3 by means of a rivet 11, which rivet is passed through the flanges 12 and the stifening or strengthening bar 13. I have illustrated this construction simply to show one method of connecting the hinge member 2 to the swinging element.

It will be understood that so far as the present invention is concerned it is immaterial as to how the hinge members are connected to the relatively lined object and the relatively swinging one.

It will be understood that the handle or knob 7 will also serve the purpose of limiting the sliding movement of the yoke in one direction and the head in the opposite.

For the purpose of allowing the pintle portion of the yoke to be moved a suflicient distance to remove said pintle portion from the connecting eye or flange 8, the shoulder l0 is located at one side of the recess into which the eye-flange 8 is seated, so that when the head 9 strikes against the shoulder l0 the pintle portion will be entirely removed rom the eye flange 8.

I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A detachable hinge consisting of two members, one of said members provided with bores having dierent diameters, a yoke consisting of pintle, retaining andhandle portions, said retaining portion provided with a head, substantially as and for the purpose speciiied.

2. In a detachable hinge, the combination of hinge members provided with knuckles, a sliding yoke carried by one of the hinge members and adapted to couple the opposite hinge member to the member carrying the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

3. In a detachable hinge, the combination of hinge members provided with eye knuckles, a sliding yoke carried by one of the hinge members and adapted to couple the opposite hinge member to the member carrying the yoke, and means for limiting the movements of the yoke, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

4. In a detachable hinge, the combination of two members, one of said members provided with a recess adapted to receive the other hinge member, the member provided with a recess having longitudinal bores of different diameters, a yoke consisting of pintle retaining and knob portions, said retaining portion provided with a head, a shoulder located between the bores having different diameters, said shoulder located at one side of the recess into which the eye member of the hinge is entered, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

5. In a detachable hinge, the combination with separable hinge members, of a pintle member movable into and out of engagement with one of the hinge members, said pintle member undetachably connected to one of said members and provided with a handle adapted to join the pintle and hinge members together, substantially as and for the purpose speciied.
