speeication of Letters Patent'.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Application filed December 19, 1907. Serial No. 407,224.
T o all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES A. TRAVERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoople, in the county of Walsh, State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Tm rovements in Envelo s; and I do hereby dec are the following to e a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in envelops and it has more particular reference to safety envelops constructed against fradulent mani ulation.
The invention more specifical y comprises an envelop embodying a body portion and sealing flaps foldable thereupon, and it is the primary .object to provide an envelop blank of novel construction towards the ends of sealing the said flaps to one another and to the said body portion, whereby mutilation of one or more of the flaps will result if an attempt is made to open the envelop surreptitiously.
The details of construction will appear in the course of the following description, in which reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a art of this specification, like characters of re erence designating similar parts, throughout the several views, Whereinz- Figure 1 is a view showing the blank from which the present envelo is constructed. Fig. 2 is a view of the enve op partly folded. Fig. 3 is a view of the envelo ready for use. Fig. 4 is a view of the enve op sealed, and stamped. Fig. 5 is a section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 4, looking in the direction of the arrow.
In the accompanying drawings, the envelop blank is shown as com rising a rectangular body 5, at one side o which is a c0- eXtensive rectangular side flap 6, and along the lower edge of which is a rectangular bottom flap 7, the fla s 6 and 7, being fdldable alon creases 8 an 9. The body 5 is provided along its upper edge with an auxiliary upper flapy 10 and along the side opposite to the flap 6 with an auxiliary side flap 11, the flaps 10 and 11 being foldableJ along creases 12 and 13. The flap 6 is provided centrally thereof along its lower edge with a ton ue 14 having laterally projecting fingers 14a oldable along gummed as at 17 the portions 16 and 17, be-
ing designed to adhere to one another. The flap 10 is formed centrally thereof with a proj ecting tongue 18 having laterally projecting fingers 18a similar to the lingers 14a which tongue 18 is insertible through a slit 19` formed longitudinally and centrally in the upper portion of theflap 6, the said tongue 18 being gummed on its outer face to adhere to the inner face of the flap 6, and the fingers 18 a being similarly gummed and being spread and similarly sealed after the insertion of the tongue 18. The flap 11 is formed centrally thereof, with a' projecting tongue 20, having laterally projecting lfingers 20a similar to the fingers 14a and 18a, which tongue 20is insertible through coextensive slits 21 and 22 formed in the flaps 6 and 7, transversely thereof, and at one side thereof, the tongue 20 being gummed on its outer surface to adhere to the inner face of the flap 7 and the fingers v2Oa being similarly gummed and being spread and similarly sealed after the insertion of the tongue" 2,0. It will thus be seen that the tongue 14 adheres tothe body 5, the tongue 18 adheres to the flap 6 and the tongue 20- adheres to the flap 7. Thus, the various parts of the envelop are connected in such manner, that it is impossible to open the said envelop at any point without tearing or mutilating some part. At the same time, the arrangement of parts is such, as not to interfere with the pocket afforded between the flaps 5 and 7 for the reception of a letter.
In use, the flap 7 is folded upon the body 5, the flap 6 upon the Hap 7, the tongue 14 inserted through the slit 15, the gummed faces 16 and 17 adhering, the flap 11 is folded upon the flap 6, the tongue 20 inserted through the slits 21 and 22 and finally the flap 10 is folded upon the flap 6 and the tongue 18 inserted through the slit 19, this slit being arranged below the gumming 17. Additional precaution is had against opening the envelop by placing the stamp A indi-` cated in Fig. 4 by dotted lines, in the corner of the ap 6 and partially upon the flap l0. What is claimed is An envelop of the type set forth, comprising a rectangular body forined at one side thereof with a rnain flap and at its other side with anauxiliary flap, the said body being also formed with a main lower flap and an auxiliary upper flap, the inain side flap being formed with a tongue projecting centrally from its lower edge and gurnrned on its outer surface, said body being formed along the line of its lower edge with a longitudinal slit, the said tongue being insertible through said slit, the auxiliary side flap being formed along its outer edge with a projecting tongue, the main side ap and the lower flap being forrned transversely thereof lwith slits de signed to register in the folded relationl of said flaps, said last named tongue being ble through said last narned slits in their registering relation, the said rnain side flap being formed with a slit longitudinally thereof7 the said upper flap being formed with a tongue projecting from its outer edge, said last named tongue being guinined on its outer face and insertible through said last named slit. i
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
