COMBINATION FURNITURE To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, NAPOLEON J OSEPH COTE, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at the city and district of Montreal, Province of Quebec, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Combination Furniture; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

The present invention relates to combina tion furniture, and more particularly to the folding bed type of furniture wherein a ward robe, chifionnier, bureau, closet or the like is combined with a bed, the two constituting one structure adapted for a two-fold purpose and each serving its particular purpose when the whole structure is in one or another of its several positions.

Broadly speaking, the invention comprises a combined bed and wardrobe, and a casing adapted to receive the combination piece together with suitable connections between the combination iece and the casing whereby the same may e raised or lowered, and when in its raised position will lie snugly within the casing and devices adapted to assist both in raising and lowering the combination piece.

In order to more clearly disclose the construction, use and operation of this invention, reference should be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of the present invention, wherein like reference characters designate similar parts in the several views.

In the drawings :Figure 1 is a front view of the device in its extreme closed position, showing it adapted for use as a wardrobe; Fig. 2 is a side view of the device showing the same in full lines, in its lowered position, and in dotted lines in its first position just preliminary to being lowered; Fig. 3 is a detail on line 33 of Fig. 4 showing the spring retarder; Fig. 4 is a detail on line 4-4 of Fig.

3; and, Fig. 5 is a detail on line 5-5 of Fig. 4.

The invention as a whole comprises a suitable casing 1 adapted to completely and snugly receive a combination piece comprising a bed 2 and a wardrobe 3 which in the preferred form are securely fastened together to form substantially one piece, the ward' robe being accessible and adapted for use when the piece as a whole is raised and fitted within the casing, and the bed being accessi- Specification of Letters Patent.

ble and ready for use when the piece is in its lowered position, all as will readily appear from Figs. 1 and 2 respectively. This combination piece is pivotally mounted at 4 on arms 5, the opposite ends of which are pivotally connected to the inner faces of the casing 1 as at 7.

In order to prevent the combination piece falling with the full force of its weight, a retarding device is used, the operation and construction of which will be later disclosed. This retarding device comprises a rod 8 carried by brackets 9, or the like, which are suitably secured to the inside of the casing 1. In the preferred form this retarder is mounted in brackets on the bottom of the casing, thoughof course it may be mounted on the side or in other positions, provided it is so positioned that its function will be the same. On the rod 8 is loosely mounted a spring 10 adapted to be compressed between yokes 11, mounted to travel freely on said rod. These yokes are pivoted to the arms 5 at points diametrically'opposed as shown in Fig. 8. As will be clear from Fig. 3, as the combination piece is lowered to the position of Fig. 2 the yokes 11 will approach one another and the spring 10 will be compressed. Of course, the reaction of the spring as it is gradually compressed will increase and its resulting retardation of the same 5 and the combination piece mounted thereon will likewise gradually increase. Thus the maximum eflect of the spring will be brought to bear at the lowest position of the arm 5, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 3, and the minimum efliciency when the arm 5 is in its highest position, as indicated in said Fig. 2, in full lines.

In order to allow free turning of the combination piece as a whole about the pivot point 7 preliminary to lowering the same, it is essential that a space be provided between the back of the casing 1 and the bed 2 at the moment it is desired to lower the piece. It is also essential to make the casing 1 as small as possible and in order to accomplish both results, the pivotal connection 4 between the upper end of the arm 5, and the combination piece has been provided. Due to this construction, as will appear from a comparison of Figs. 1 and 2, the device may first be pulled outward in the direction of the arrow (Fig. 2) a sufficient distance to permit it to be swung about the pivot 7 without binding against the back of the casing 1. The distance of this outward movement is limited by the post 12 with which the lower end of the bed contacts, and thus on continued movement of the same, the combined bed and wardrobe is tilted into a horizontal position, all as will clearly appear on reference to Fig. 2. The drawer when in position forms an ab solute lock for the combination piece, thus completely preventing the same from being lowered or moved from a perfectly upright position, as will be readily understood.

A- preferred form only of the device has been illustrated, and it is clear that many changes in the construction, operation and arrangement may be resorted to without in any way departing from the field and scope of the present invention, and it is meant to include all such in the invention as described by the present application.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. Combination furniture of the character described,'comprising a casing, arms pivotally mounted in said casing, a combination wardrobe and bed carried by said arms and adapted to be swung to a vertical position and completely inclosed within the casing, and a removable drawer adapted to be in serted in the casing below the combination The space which is necesbed and wardrobe to lock the same in raised position.

2. A retarding device for combination furniture of the character described comprising a rod, a spring mounted upon said rod, yokes adapted to slide upon said rod and connected at diametrically opposed points to an arm,

whereby the aforesaid spring is compressed upon movement of the aforesaid arms.

3. A retarding devlce for furniture of the character described comprising a rod, a

. otally mounted arm, yokes adapted to slide upon said rod and to compress said spring, and connections between said. yokes and said arm whereby upon movement of said arm the yokes are moved and the spring compressed.

6. A retarding device for combination furniture of the character described, comprising a rod, a spring mounted upon said rod, a pivotally mounted arm, perforated yokes adapt ed to slide upon said rod and to compress said spring, and pivotal connections between said yoke and said arms whereby upon movement of the said arm the yokes are moved and the spring compressed.
