NECKTIE-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM THoMAs ROB- INSON, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Necktie-Fastener, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in necktie fasteners.
The object of the present invention is to improve the construction of necktie fasteners, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient necktie fastener, adapted .to firmly secure the ends of a four-in-hand necktie, or analogous necktie, to the bosom of a shirt to retain the necktie in position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a necktie fastener of this character, designed particularly for summer use, and adapted to be entirely concealed by the ends of a necktie, so that it will be invisible when a vest is not worn.
Another object of the invention is to provide a necktie fastener, having clamping means for engaging one end of a necktie and the bosomof a shirt, and rovided with a se arate fastening device, adapted to positive y engage the other end of the necktie at any point, and capable of holding the same in any position.
The invention also has for its object to provide a necktie fastener, capable of being quickly operated to engage or release a necktie.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted. to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a necktie fastener, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 is a reverse plan view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 31-20 of Fig. 4. A Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the slidable necktie-engaging prongs or P1118.

l designates a substantially U shaped clamp, composed of an inner or rear clamping jaw or side 2 and a front or outer jaw or side 3. The jaws or sides are connected at one end of the clamp by a connecting portion or spring bend 5, and the inner or rear jaw is bent at an intermediate point to form an interiorly arranged necktie-engaging shoulder 6. The outer or free ends 7 and 8 of the j aws 2 and 3 are flared or bent in opposite directions to provide an enlarged mouth or entrance for enabling the clamp to be readily engaged with the inner end of a necktie and a portion of the bosom of a shirt.
The device is especially designed for openbosom shirts, and one side of the bosom and the inner end of the necktie are held between the jaws of the U-shaped clamp.
In order to enable the clamp to positively and firmly engage the shirt and necktie, the jaw 2 is split longitudinally to provide a spring clamping tongue 9, extending inwardly towards the spring bend, and arranged at an angle to the said jaw 2, and having its free inner engaging end located adjacent to the inner face of the other jaw 3. By this arrangement, the engaging portion of the tongue 9 is forced in the direction of the jaw 3, when the ends 7 and 8 of the said jaws are separate, by inserting the shirt and the necktie between them. This will cause the spring tongue to firmly and tightly engage the shirt, and the pressure of the spring tongue on the shirt increases with the spreading of the ends 7 and 8 of the jaws, so that the wider the jaws are spread apart, the greater will be the clamping action of the spring tongue on the shirt. The jaw 3 is provided adjacent to its rear end with an opening 10, located at the engaging end of the tongue 9 and adapted to permit the spring tongue to be arranged contiguous to the plane of the inner face of the jaw 3. The clamping action of the spring tongue may be increased by bending it away from the jaw 2 and extending the tongue into the opening 10 to a greater or less degree, during the manufacture of the necktie fastener. The metal cut from the jaw 3 to form the opening 10 is bent at an angle to provide a projecting lug or stop 11, for limiting the backward movement of a pair of slidable pins or prongs 12.
The pins or prongs 12, which are arranged in parallelism, are connected at their rear ends by a substantially U-shaped loop 13, and are slidable in guides 14 of the jaw 3. The guides 14 consist ofelongated eyes, and are formed by rolling flanges or portions of the metal of the jaw. The pins or prongs are located at the exterior of the jaw 3, and the loop 13 is located between the pins 'or prongs, and its sides are connected with the same by projecting bends 15, which form finger pieces for enabling the pins or prongs to be readily operated. The engaging ends of the pins or prongs are pointed to enable them tof'readily pierce a necktie, and the jaw 3 is provided adjacent to its front end 8 with eyes 16, spaced from the guides 14, and forming keepers in which the points of the pins or prongs are arranged, when the device is in use. The backward movement of the slidable pins or prongs is limited by the loop 13, which slides on the exterior of the jaw 3 and which engages the projecting stop or lug 11.
The loop 13 is resilient, and its sides are provided at points between their ends with outwardly projecting portions 17 preferably formed by bending or bowing the sides of the loop outwardly and adapted to engage the guides 14. The guides 14 are provided at points between their ends with recesses 18, arranged to receive the bends or projecting portions 17, when the pins or prongs are in their engaging position, and forming shoulders for preventing any rearward movement of the loop and the pins or prongs, whereby the latter are retained in engagement with the necktie. hen the pins or prongs are at the limit of their rearward movement, the laterally projecting portions 17 of the loop 13 engage the rear ends of the guides 14 and lock the pins or prongs against forward movement. By this construction the slidable pins or prongs are locked either in or out of engagement with the necktie.
After the clamp is engaged with the shirt bosom and the inner end of'a necktie, the outer end of the latter is doubled or bent longitudinally to bow it inwardly and the bent portion is introduced into the 'sp ace between the guides and the keepers. This will enablethe pins or prongs to engage the lining or inner face of the outer end of the necktie, which will be securely held and which will conceal the device.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a clamp composed of two sides or jaws,
one of the sides or j aws being provided with a projecting lug or stop formed by cutting the jaw and bending the cut portion outwardly to provide an opening, the other jaw being provided with a spring tongue extending to wards the rear end of the clamp and having its free end located at the said opening, and slidable fastening means mounted on the clamp and having its movement in one direction limited by the projecting lug or stop.
2. A device of the class described comprising a clamp provided at opposite sides with exterior guides, pins or prongs slidable in the guides, an inwardly extending loop connecting the pins or prongs and provided with bends forming projecting portions for engaging the guides for holding the pins or prongs in or out of engagement.
3. .A device of the class described comprising a clamp provided at opposite sides with spaced guides having recesses, pins or prongs slidable in the guides, and a substantially U-shaped loop connected with the pins or prongs and provided at opposite sides with bowed portions arranged to extend into the recesses for retaining the pins or prongs in engagement, the said loop being also adapted to engage the inner ends of the guides for holding the pins or prongs out of engagement.

A device of the class described comprising a clamp composed of two sides or aws, one of the sides or jaws being provided with a projecting lug or stop and having an opening formed by cutting the lug or stop from the material of the clamp and bending the cut portion outwardly, a spring tongue extending from the other jaw to the said opening, pins or prongs. slidable on the exterior of the jaw having the lug, and a loop connecting the pins or prongs and arranged to be engaged by the said lug, whereby the movement of the pins or prongs is limited in one direction.
5. A device of the class described comprising a clamp provided at opposite sides with exterior guides, spaced pins or prongs slidable in the guides, and a connecting device for the pins or prongs arranged to frictionally engage the exterior faces of the guides at different points for holding the pins or prongs in and out of engagement.
6. A device of the class described comprising a clamp having spaced guides, spaced pins slidable in the guides of the clamp, and
a resilient connecting loop connecting the pins and yieldably engaging the guides for holding the pins in and out of engagement.
