Description

V .PATBNTED JUNE 9, 1908. A. H. RBINHOLD. ENVELOP OPENER 0R PAPER CUTTER.
' APPLIOATION FILED 00T.7,1907.

'UNITED STATES PATENT oF IoE.
' ALEXANDER H. REINHOLD, or DETROIT, MICHIGAN;
, ENVELOP-OPENER OR PAPER-CUTTER.
To all whomitmay concern:
at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement-in Envelop Openers or Paper- Cutters, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same,
such as will enable others skilledin the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of thisspecification.
This invention relates to envelop openers or paper cutters, adapted to be used to clip off a thin clipping of the end from an envelop.
- In the drawingsjt-Figure '1, is apierspective of the machine. Fig. 2, isa front elevationof the rear part of the frame. Fig. 3, is an elevation of the knife and the backing of the knife. Fig. 4, is a section on the line A box-like case 1 contains a vertically reciprocating knife 2, and forms a, chamber to hold the clippings detached from envelops in the course of the use to which the article is intended. The knife 2, is secured to a reci rocating plate 4 that engages between t e ends 5 and 6 of the case. At the rear of the reciprocating plate 4 is a hanging frame-bar 7 which hangs from the top plate 8, and
which is provided with seats 9, 10 and 11 for the reception of movable members 12, which bear against the back of the plate 4, and hold the knife 2, into close engagement with the front wall 13 of the case. The pressure members 12, are each pressed forward by a spring'14 inserted in t pressure member. The pressure member e cavity behind the carries on its front or protruding end an antifriction ball 15, restingin a seat in the pres-' sure member, and the actual contact is between the 'antifricti'on ball 15 and the back .of the plate 4. To' the plate 4 is secured a stem 16, which rises through a' suitable open- I I Specification of Letters Patent.
l Application filed October 7, 1907, Serial No. 896,162.
. cured to the cap 18 and to the plate 4, and Be it known that I, ALEXANDER H. REIN- HOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing within the housing 17;' surrounding the stem 16, is a spring 19, which engages between the bdttom of the housing 17 and the inner face of the cap 18 and lifts the cap, the stem connected to it, the plate 4, and the knife. attached to the plate. Through the front Wall 13 is a suitable aperture 20 for the insertion of the end of the envelop to be treated. The knife is so located with referupper positionthere is a clear opening underneath the cutting edge 21 of the knife, and
of the opening 20. The lower edge 21 of the ed e22 of the case, and the depression of the knife causes the two to engage with a shearing cut.
referably the instrument is made of a size and weight to be utilized as: a paper weight on the desk.
The rear closure 23 of the case is preferably arranged to be attached to, or removed from the-remainder of the case by springing the up er edge out fro'munder the cover plate 8, an lifting the projecting in 24 out from a socket 26 in the bottom p ate 25.
What I claim is Ina combinedenvelop clipping machine and paper weight, the combination of a hollow weight, a reciprocating knife contained possible travel within the casing is limited, means within said'weight for yieldingly holding the knifein shearing position with respect to acomplementary fixed shearing por tion of said casing, and means for yieldingly holding said knife at the; upper limit of its possible travel within said casing, substan tially as described.
In testimony whereof, I, sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
