`snRsMrTH and WILLrAM HEALY, `both citizens of the United States of America, and residents of-Yonkers, in the county of Westchester, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful `Im roveme'nts in ollowing is a specification.
Our invention has for its object'to provide an improvement in tufted cushions, mattresses, or similar articles whereby the buttons forming the. tufts may' be readily cleaned. A
In the usual form 'of mattresses and cushions in which the upholstering is formed by a button drawn through and rigidly held in place, this is difficult as dirt, dust and insects get below the buttons and it is impossible to remove them.
With our invention thebuttons are held in place by elastic connection whereby they may be drawn out-from .the recess which the form for the purpose of cleaning them the recesses.
Our invention therefore consists of the construction, Aarrangement and combination of the several parts of which it is com-v posed, as will .be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
.Referring to the accompanying drawings in which. the corresponding parts are designated by similar marks of reference, Figure l represents a perspective view of a cushion constructed in. accordance with this inven# tion, a button being represented as drawn out for the purpose of cleaning. These buttons consist of a suitable, head portion' c and the eye d, through the hole of which asses an elastic cord or fabric E, proper y secured around the back F of the cushion so that the button may be lifted out of the depression by extending the elastic connection.
The preferred manner 'of assembling the elastic cord or fabric and the buttons is to firmlyfasten one end of. the cord or fabric to the back of the cushion, pass the other end up through an aperture therein, thread it through the eye of the button, pass it back through the aforesaid aperture and on through the remaining apertures andr buttons consecutively in the same manner and until all the buttons are held in place. The end of the cord is then firmly fastened to the back. Thus it is evident that a continuous elastic connection is used to secure all of the buttons upon the upholstered article.
ln an article constructed yin accordance with our invention it will be'seen that th buttons may be lifted by hand out of the recesses formed thereby, and away from the cover, this permitting not only access to the 'buttons themselves, but also permitting access to the cover beneath the buttons and the removal of dirt, dust land insects there'- from.
Having thus fully described our l invention what weclairn and desire tov secure by Letters Patent is :l-
1. In a new and improved article of manufacture, an upholstered article provided with a plurality of buttons secured thereto by a continuous elastic connection, substantially as described.
k2, The combination with an upholstered article of a back therefor, a facing, a plurality of buttons holding the facing into tufts, and. a continuous elastic connection between the back and the said buttons, substantially as described.
