Specification of Letters Eatent.
Patented Mar. 28, T9311.
Application filed May 27, 1910. Serial No. 563,689.
y To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, Anraosn J. BRADY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Brush, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a brush structure and more particularly to a type of brush which is adapted for a combined scraping anu brushing action, whereby not only loose particles may be removed from a surface but also any particles having a tendency to adhere to the surface.
It consists of a suitable brush back having a plurality of bristles, preferably positioned to produce an interlaced effect, secured thereto in a novel manner to permit ready removal of each bristle or as many as may be desired.
It further consists of other novel features of construction, all as will be hereinafter fully set forth.
For the purpose of illustrating my invent-ion have shown in the accompanying drawing one form thereof which is at present preferred by me, since the same has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, although it is to be understood that the various instrumentalities of which my invention consists can be variously arranged and organized and that my invention is not limited to the precise arrangement and organization of these instrumentalities as herein shown and described.
Figure l represents a perspective of my novel brush structure. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 represents a plan of a portion of the device. Fig. 4 represents a section on line cc-w, Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indica-te corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings: A designates my novel brush structure, comprising in the present instance, a body portion or head B provided with a plurality of openings C therein, which openings are preferably arranged in rows spaced apart in order to properly position the bristles D which are mounted therein. It will be noted that each end row of the openings C is preferably arranged on a substantial curve in order to effect operation of certain adjuncts, presently to be described. As here shown, the
bristles D are of metallic construction and each is formed by bending the material into a substantially U-shaped or loop form so that the entire bristle structure is made up of a plurality of loops, which in assembled position are arranged to present an interlaced efect, whereby one bristle backs up or strengthens an adjacent one and the rows of bristles while being more or less flexible, present a substantially rigid and stiff eiect. Tn assembling the brush, it will be noted. that each opening C is made large enough, in the present instance, to accommodate two of the bristles and the same are passed through the opening so as to interit, one with the other, resulting in a crossed edect, as shown in Fig. t of the drawings. Thus, as all of the openings are supplied with the bristles D, a plurality of spaced rows of bristles are formed, each row being prevented from passing through the body portion B, by means of a rod E which passes through the loop portion of each bristle on one side of the body portion. ln order to retain the rods E the ends F of the saine are here shown as bent inwardly in a manner, which will be readily understood. By this construction it will be apparent that any particular bristle or row of vbristles may readily be removed by bending one end F on the rod E so that the latter may be slipped laterally and thus be removed from engagement with the bristles. G designates a suitable. back preferably provided with depending ianges H, which are of suiiicient dimension to inclose the body portion B. This back Gr is here shown provided with an inturned lug L forming a lip adapted to coperate with the bottom of the body portion B and serve as a retaining means for one end of the body portion within the back, while the opposite end is held by means of a screw J passing through suitable apertures provided in both the back Gr and body portion B, with which screw a thumb nut K engages in a well known manner. Thus, it will be seen that the assembling of the body portion with its attached bristles to the back G is accomplished by inserting one end of the body portion back of the lug L and drawing the opposite end into engagement with the back by means of the thumb screw K. By the means just described the baclr may be easily disconnected by proper operation of the thumb screw li, thereby affording ready access to the rods E, any or all oi which may be talren out to permit the replacing of any bristles worn or broken.
It will now be apparent that I have devised a novel brush structure simple in construction, comprising few parts and one which is particularly adapted for use in connection with butchers blocks, tables or like surfaces, on which particles frequently adhere and cannot be removed by use ot the ordinary brush. Furthermore, the interlaced or crossed arrangement of the bristles presents a plurality of stift, eillective members, one reinforcing the other, whereby eflicient operation of the device is possible. It will be noted that the curve of each end row affords a space for operation of the locking member J.
In the use of the word bristles l wish it to be understood that thereby I include all material of the class suitable for brushing, scraping, scrubbing and the like, such as would be used in an article of this lrind.
It will now be apparent that l have devised a novel and useful construction which embodies the features ot' advantage enumer ated as desirable in the statement of the invention and the above description and while I have in th-e present instance shown and described the preferred embodiment thereoi1 which has been found in practice to give satisfactory and reliable results, it is to be understood that the saine is susceptible of modification in various particulars without departing from the spirit or scope of the invent-ion or sacriiicing any of its advantages.
Having thus described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. In a brush, a back, a head, the latter eeaovs .ln a brush, a back, a head, the latter having a plurality ot openings therein, a plurality of rods interposed between said head and back and a plurality of bristles in pairs on said rods and retained thereon, two pairs of bristles passing through an opening with the members crossing each other and one pair of members in one opening crossing one pair ot' members passing through the next adjacent opening.
3. In a device of the character stated, a body portion having a plurality ot rows of openings, a rod suitably positioned with respect to each row of openings, a pair oi' bristles passing through each opening and. supported by a rod, said bristles being positioned in crossed relation to each other, a bristle of one opening crossing a bristle ot' the next adjacent opening' in the same row, whereby a brush surface is formed of double crossed bristles, a baclr having sides adapted to inclose said body portion, a lug on one end of said body portion, and a fastening means passing through the opposite end or' said back and body portion.
l. In a device of the character stated, a body portion having a plurality of rows of openings, a rod suitably positioned with respect to each row of openings, a bristle meinber passing through each opening and supported on said rod, a. second bristle member superposed thereon and passing through the same opening in crossed relation with respect to the first bristle and a bristle of an opening crossing' a bristle of the next adjacent opening in the same row, whereby a bristle surface is formed of double crossed bristles, a back having sides adapted to inclose said body portion and contacting with said bristles to positively hold the same, an inturned lip integral with said back adapted to cooperate with one end of said body porhaving a plurality of openings therein, a tion, and a fastening means passing through plurality of rods interposed between said the opposite end of said back and body porhead and back, and a plurality of bristles in tion. pairs on said rods and retained thereon, the AMBROSE J.
