Description
NSMWED STATES PATENT CFFICE` CHARLES C. FELTON, OF DEDHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
SASH STOPPER ANI) FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 8,885, dated April 20, 1852.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES C. FELToN, of Dedham, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new or Improved Vindow-Sash Fastener and Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the same is fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, letters, figures, and references thereof.
Cf the said drawings Figure 1 denotes an elevation of a window frame and its two sashes, having my improved fastener and supporter applied to each of the latter and represented in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the whole apparatus.`
In the said drawings A and B respectively represent the lower and upper sashes of the window, C being t-he `frame thereof. The supporter and fastener applied to one sash `is similar to that affixed to the other, except that its position in this case is the reverse of that in the other as denoted in Fig. l.
. -It consist-s first of a catch plate E which is led into the face of the pulley stile and kept in place by a screw F. The inner surface of the catch plate is made obtuse angular as seen at a, b, c and terminates against a stop or shoulder cl.
The said supporter and fastener consists secondly of a lever bar F whose surface which is against the surface a, o, c is made straight or nearly so and rests or works on the vertex ZJ of the angle a, b, c. This bar is made with a projection f from its rear side on which projection a helical spring g is placed and let into the sash A, the said spring being made to press the lever bar toward the pulley stile or side of the window frame C. A thumb rod it provided with a head z' is affixed to the lower end of the lever bar and extends through an opening la made through the sash.
Where the parts are in the position with respect to one another as seen inFig. 2, if pressure is made on the head c', the lever bar can be made to turn on the vertex bof the axis of the projection f or the helical spring g', and the end fm of the lever bar, in order that the outward pressure of the spring when the end m is brought directly opposite or against the shoulder Z may throw the upper part of the lever bar into the recess formed by the-inner face of the part Z), c, and theshoulder d, as seenin Fig. 2, and thereby cause the sash to be locked or fastened to the pulley stile or window frame when down to its lowest position in case it be the lower sash, or up in its upper position y in case it be the upper sash.
During any vertical movement of the' sash the lever bar is forced by its spring against the pulley stile, the force being suflicient to overcome the weight of the sash and create friction suicient to hold it in any desirable 'position in the window frame, thus, dispensing with the use of balance weights, cords `and pulleys, as generally employed for such purpose.
My improved sash supporter and fastener has great advantages over many or all othiers in use, for," consisting of few parts it is easily and cheaply made and can bevreadily applied to a window. Its operation is sure or certain and it is not likely to get out of order.
I do not claim the combination of a rocking or vibrating friction plate, a lever spring, and notched plate as they are arranged in the drawings of the patent granted to B. S. I-Iadaway; but, as I dispense fentirely with a lever separate from the rocking friction plate and make the said plate to operate itself I claim My improvement of combining the rocking plate F and lever in one single piece, and extending it below the part which rocks on the part of the notch of the catch plate. all essentially in manner as described,
whereby I greatly simplify the construction i
