MODE OF HANGING WINDOW-SASHES.
Specification of Letters Patent No. 13,764, dated November 6, 1855.
To @ZZ whom 'it may concer/n.:
Be it known that I, J. W. Ross, of Zanesville, in the county of Muskingum and State of Ohio, late of Chillicothe, in the county of Boss and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Mode of Hanging Window- Sashes; and I do hereby declare t-hat the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of a window casing, a portion of the stile of the casing being removed in order to show my improvement. Fig. 2, is a front view of ditto, one of the stiles being bisected vertically, and my improvement also bisected as indicated by the line (as), Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the two figures.
The nature of my invention consists in having straps attached to the lower part of each sash, and having said straps pass over pulleys in a reverse manner and so arranged as will be presently shown and described, that when the pulleys are connected one sash will balance the other, one being lowered while the other is being raised, and by disconnecting the pulleys one sash may be raised without the other.
To enable others skilled in the art to fully understand and construct my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A represents a window casing and, B, B, are window sashes placed in it in the usual way.
B, represents a small shaft, which is placed in one of the stiles (a), of the casing at about its center, and on this shaft there are placed loosely two pulleys (5), 5'), the two pulleys being connected together. To the bottom of the lower sash, B, there is attached a strap C, and this strap passes over the pulley (5), the end of the strap being attached to the periphery of the pulley The pulley (5'), adjoining the pulley (5), has an elastic band D, attached to its periphery and the outer end of the band, D, is attached to the upper end of the lower sash B,-see Fig. 2. The strap O, works over a friction roller (c), within the stile (a), and just below the shaft, B. The elastic band, D, and strap, C, pass around their respective pulleys in opposite directions and the band, D, under the friction roller (c), see Fig. 2.
On the shaft, B, there is permanently attached a pulley, E, which has a strap, F, attached to its periphery, the outer end of the strap F being attached to the lower end of the upper sash, B. The inner side of the pulley, E, as well as the inner and adjoining side of the pulley (5), have teeth or projections (d), upon them which when the shaft, B, is shoved inward, causes the two pulleys to be connected similar to a clutch see Fig. l. The strap F, passes around the pulley E, in a reverse direction to that of the strap, O, which passes around the pulley (5). rlhe shaft, B, has its bearings in two metal plates, (e), (e), and on the end of the shaft B, at the outer side of the pulley E, there is placed a spiral spring G one end of which bears against the side of the pulley, E, and the opposite end against the plate (e). The outer side of the pulley, E, has teeth (f), on its edge against one of which a stop (g), attached to the side of the plate (e), catches when the pulleys (5'), and, E, are disconnected see Fig. 2.
H, is a slide placed at the inner end of the shaft, B, and, I, is a spring lever having a knob or button, J, at its lower end. The lever has its fulcrum at (k). The upper end of the lever, I, bears against the end of the slide H.
Operation: lVhen the two pulleys (5), (5'), are connected to the pulley, E, one sash will be lowered while the other is raised, because the straps C, F, pass around their respect-ive pulleys in opposite directions, and consequently one sash will balance the other. lVhen it is desired to raise the lower sash, and keep the upper one in proper position, the pulley E, is disconnected from the pulleys (5), (5'), by operating the spring lever, I, and shoving the shaft, B, back free from the teeth or projections,` (d), on the side of the pulley, (5'). One of the teeth or projections (f), will then catch against the stop (g) and the stop will prevent the pulley, E, from turning, and consequently retain the upper sash, B, in proper posit-ion. The lower sash, B, may then be raised without moving the upper sash, the elastic band, D, taking up the slack of the strap, C, as the lower sash is raised.
The above invention is simple, may be it and the pulleys E, being connected and disconnected when desired as shown, the pulley (In), having a pulley (29') attached to it, to which pulley an elastic band D, is attached said band being also attached to the sash B, the above parts being otherwise arranged substantially as herein shown for t-he purpose set forth.
