Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1908.-
Application filed January 5, 1905. Serial No. 239,765.
To all LU/tom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, MAURICE M. STRAUss, a citizen ofthe United States, and a resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Ship ing-Packa es and Hangers for Garments, o which the fo owing. is declared to be a full, clear, and exact description.
The improvement relates to shipping packages and holders for garments ann particularly for trousers, and seeks to provide an inexpensive package in which trousers and the like can be shipped without Wrinkling and which can also e used as a garment holder.
The invention consists in the features ofconstruction and arrangement of arts hereinafter set forth, illustrated in t e accomdrawings and more particularly pointe out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of Fig. 2 1s a view of the same with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the box section of the package. Fig. 4 is a lono'itudinal'section of the ackage. Fig.5 is an e arged section of part o the boxI bottom and Fi 6' is a view of the box bottom as change to form a garment holder.
The improved package is formed of heavy paper board and comprises a box section 10 and a lcover section 11 adapted to snugly iit The box and cover sections are preferably collapsible and formed of blanks of paper board scored on the lines a to form the straight foldable ends 12 and sides` .13. Each side and end iece is provided at one end with a foldab e tongue 14 ada ted to interlock with or engage a-slot 15 in. t e end of the adjacent side or end piece. detail in Fig.
tion is similarly constructed but is slightly er to fit snugly over the box section.
he straight ends of the box and cover sections are parallel and one straightvside is arranged at right angles to the ends, while the o posite straight sideis inclined thereto so tlliatpthe'box 1s Wider at one end than the other, and the box as a whole is. so shaped as tov receive a pair of trousers once folded, as indicated, or with bottom end of the trousers turned .'in to a slight extent. Moreover, the end and side pieces 12 and 13are narrow so that the' box and cover sections are shallow and are each less in thickness than the folded pair of trousers, as indicated in Fig. 3. The f device by .which the box section may `prises a loop 19 of tape passed through 4 c,so that the trousers are oncefolded and placed flat 1n the. 'shallow box section 10, the cover section 1 1 is placed over the box section and the two seotions of the ackage tied together with string,
not be wrinkled during transportation, even if the packages are roughly handled. With' packages now in use, trousers and other ar` ments must be pressed when received a ter shipment before they can be Worn.
One of the separate sections of the package, preferably, the bottom or box section, is provided with tion 16, formed by scoring or partially cutting through the bottom of the box on the' lines so that when the portion 16 is removed, an elongated cross slot is formedthrough which the trousers are passed when the box portion is used as a holder.
A reinforcement 17 of paper board, asted or otherwise cemented to the inner ace of the bottom of the box '10, is provided with an elongated cross slot 18 in line with the removable portion 16. yOne end of thereinforcement is provided with a suitable hangbe supported in vertical position With the trouser-supporting slot horizontallydisposed. In the form shown, the hanger comahole 20 in the reinforcement. Prefera ly, the upper end of the reinforcement 17 is provided on opposite sides of the hanger '19 with inclined shoulder-engaging portions c,
`and preferably also, the box bottom 10 is scored or partially cut through as at d in line with the inclined shoulder engaging portions sections 21 of the box bottom 10', are easily removable.
The recipient of the remove the ends and side 2 and 13 and the portions 16 and 21 of the ox, since the latter .is scored or partially the lines a, b and d, so that a garment hanger such as indicated in Fig. 6, is formed, an upon which the trousers, together with a. coat or other garment, may be hung up in smooth, unwrinkled condition.
It is obviousthat the details of construction may be varied without departure from the essentials of the invention as set forth in the claims.
Having described my invention, what I a detachable elongated por cut through along.
package may easily Y ment. holder comprising .separate box and eaiin new and desire to secure' by Letters @etw t .e combined shipping package and garment bolder comprising separate box and cover. sections of pa er board, one of said sections having eas' y removable side and end and having a reinforcement of pavper board cemented to the inner face thereof7 eover sections of-.paper board, one of said sections having a reinforcement ot paper board cemented to the inner face thereof,
eee-,201
said reinforcement having an elongated cross-slot therein and said package-section having an easily removable portion opposite said slot, substantially as described.
3. A combined shipping package and gar-- ment holdercomprising separate box and `cover sections of paper board7 one of said sections having a reinforcement of paper board cemented to the inner face thereof, said reinforcement having inclined shoulderengaging portions at one end and a cross-slot' below said shoulder-engaging portions, and said package section being scored in line With vsaid shoulderengaging portions and said slot, substantially as described.
