To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM N. REY- NOLDs, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Litchfield, in the county of Litchfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Name- Holders for Umbrellas or other Portable Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The purpose of the invention is to provide a name plate adapted for attachment to an umbrella handle or stick, a cane or other portable object, and to so construct the device that a card bearing the name and address can readily be introduced into the device in such manner that it will remain until purposely removed, and when so desired the card can be quickly released.

It is a further purpose of the invention to constructA the device with a cover for the card, which cover is opaque when the device is visible at the surface, but said cover being preferably made of a transparent material when the device is concealed in the article to which it is applied.

It is also a purpose of the invention to provide a name plate adaptable for the purpose described, that willbe simple, durable, readily ap lied, and which maybe exteriorly or interior flocated.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciiication in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

A represents the handle of an umbrella or cane, which in Fig. 1 is shown provided with a recess 10 produced yin one side face, into which recess the improved device is iitted, while in Fig. 7 I have illustrated the handle as provided with a chamber l1 extending through to the outer end of the handle and the device is located within said chamber,

being invisible from the outside, and the outer end portion of the chamber 11 is made circular and is enlarged, and is interiorly threaded, as is shown in 12 in said Fig. 7, to receive the threaded portion of a cap 13, which cap will constitute an ornament for the outer end of the handle.

In the construction of the device, a back plate 14 is provided of any suitable size, the plate being by preference rectangular, and the said plate is secured to the rearwall of the recess 10in any approved manner. The back plate 14 is provided at each end of its front surface with aside member 15, and these side members are reduced in width at their lower ends to form shoulders 16, best shown in Fig. 4. At the upper end portions of the back plate 14, bearings 17 extend forwardly or outwardly, and these bearings are usually rectangular, as is illustrated, although they may be given other shape, and the said bearings receive the ends of a spindle 18, and the said spindle is loosely passed through a knuckle 19 formed at the upper end of a cover 20 for the front portion of the device adapted to cover the device at its front from top to bottom, and from end to end. Thev bearings 17 extend out beyond the side pieces 15 a distance corresponding to the thickness of the cover plate 2O so that when the cover plate 2O is closed the front portion of the device will be yperfectly smooth, as is illustrated in Fig. 2.

, VV In the further construction of the body portionof the device, a cross bar 21 is carried from one side bar 15 to the other just below the knuckle 19 of the cover 20, and a space intervenes the inner face of the said cross bar, and the front face of the back plate 14, as is illustrated in Fig. 5. A second spindle 22 is secured in the side pieces 15 at their Ylower or reduced portions, and the spindle 22 loosely receives the knuckle 23 of the locking plate 24. This locking plate is reduced in Width at its end portions, as is shown particularly at 25 in Fig. 4, so that when the locking plate 24 is in its upper or normal position, the reduced end portions 25 will be immediately beneath the shoulders 16 of the side pieces 15, and the upper edges of the reduced portions 25 of the locking plate are inclined from the center downward in opposite directionsvto form toothed surfaces 26, as is illustrated in Fig. 6, and when the locking plate 24 is in its upper or normal position the toothed surfaces 26 are snapped into correspondingly shaped -recesses 27 in the shoulders 16, as is best shown in Fig. 6, the said recesses and the said toothed surfaces being so formed as to admit of such action. Thus the locking plate 24 is temporarily held in an upright position by frictional enga ement with the body of the device. The locking plate 24 is provided with a downwardly and outwardly extending lip 28 at the central portion of its outer face, as is especially shown in Figs. 3 and 5, and this lip is received in a correspondingly shaped recess 2 9 in the inner face of the bottom portion of the cover when said cover is closed, as is shown in Fig. 3, the said recess bein(r located adjacent to the bottom longitudina edge of said cover. The cover plate 20 is eXteriorly enlarged at that point where the recess 29 is made in its inner face, so as to form a lip 31, as is shown in Fig. 2, to facilitate the raising of the cover.

rl`he name,` or name and address, are produced u on a card 32 made ofany suitable materia, and when the cover plate 20 is raised and the locking plate 24 is dropped, as is shown in Fig. 5. The said card 32 is made to lie against the inner face of the back plate 14, its upper portion being at the rear of the cross bar 21, and when the locking plate is carried up to its normal position, said plate engages with the lower portion of the card 32, and in this manner the card is prevented from leaving its position in the device until it is purposely-removed. The object of the cover 20 is to prevent the name from being visible at all times when the device is eX- teriorly placed, and at such time the cover is made of an opaque material, but when the device is to be introduced into the chamber 11, as shown in Fig. 7, from which it can be readily removed, the cover 2O may be made of glass, celluloid, or Yany"'transparent material. Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desireto secure by Letters Patent;-

1. In a name holder for umbrellas, canes, and other similar articles, a body plate having means for retaining a name card in ,position, a locking plate on the body late, a cover for the body plate, and means or holding the locking plate in engagement with the introduced name card, the cover plate acting to conceal the card.

2. 1n a name holder for umbrellas, canes, and other portable articles, the combination with a body plate having means for retaining a name card in position, a locking plate at the lower portion of the body plate, and a cover at the upper portion of the said body plate, the locking plate being adapted for engagement with the name card introduced in the body plate, and the cover plate being adapted to conceal the said card.

and other portable articles, the combination with the body plate having a retaining mem-Y ber for the upper portion of an address card, of a locking plate hinged at the lower portion of the body plate and adapted for engagement with the lower portion of the inserted address card, and a cover plate hinged at the upper portion of the body plate adapted to temporarily conceal the inserted address card, means for holding the locking plate in locking position, and means for holding the cover plate locked to the locking plate.

4. 1n a name holder for umbrellas, canes, and other portable articles, a body section having means for the reception of an address card, a locking plate for the inserted card pivotally connected with the body section at its lower portion, means for holding the locking plate in frictional engagement with the said body section, and a cover plate hinged at the upper portion of the said body, the

said cover plate being provided with a recess and the locking plate with a projection to enter the said recess when the locking plate and cover plate are in normal osition.
