To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ARTHUR S. VAUGHAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mattapoisett, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Blacking-Brushes, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention resides in a blacking brush combining in one utensil the blacking brush proper, the dauber-brush and the blacking, the elements being so arranged as to present these necessary parts of the device in one compact structure.

The construction of the device enables the blacking to be stored in a convenient position and to be handled during its application to the dauber in a cleanly way without soiling the clothing or the fingers of the person using the brush.

The invention will be apparent from the accompanying description and drawing, and will be more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The single figure of drawing illustrates the invention in its preferred form, shown in side elevation with a part thereof in central longitudinal cross section.

The back or body portion of the brush is indicated at A and may be made of any suitable material such as employed in the construction of an ordinary blacking brush, as for example wood. Projecting downwardly from the back A is the polisher B, herein shown as the usual series of bristles B of suitable size and shape for polishing purposes.

The forward end of the back A is provided with an upwardly inclined extension C rigidly connected with and preferably integral with the said back. The extension C is provided on its under side with a suitable dauber D, and the angle of inclination of the extension C is such as to prevent the dauber D from coming into contact with the boot or shoe during the polishing operation of the brush B.

On the upper side of the forward extension C the blacking supply is mounted with the cover of the blacking supply box rigidly at tached to the extension C.

The cover of the blacking supply box is shown at E and it may be secured in place by l any suitable means that will secure its rigid position on the extension. The means preferably employed are a screw passing through the cover E and into the dauber D, thus securing both of these elements to the extension C, and an additional fastener G passing through the cover E into the extension C, and thus preventing any rotation of the cover E on the extension G.

The bottom portion of the blacking box H filled with the blacking is held in place by its fitting into the cover portion E.

The device is provided with the usual handle K of suitable form.

It will thus be seen that the three elements necessary for the blacking of a boot or shoe are here combined in one article in compact form. The construction is such that the dauber is out of the way during the polishing operation, but is in convenient position for use to apply the bl acking. The blacking box is so arranged as to be ready when wanted for use, and yet out of the way during the use of the polishing brush.

The difficulty in separating the box from the bottom of an ordinary blacking box is well recognized, and frequently the fingers are soiled in separating the bottom from the cover and the patience and temper of the user are severely tried. In this invention the cover is held rigidly in place, allowing the bottom of the box to be grasped by the hand, and thus readily separated from the cover when open, the blacking therein can be applied to the dauber. When the blacking is used up the bottom portion of the box can be thrown away and the bottom of a fresh box of blacking is applied to the cover already rigid with the brush.

Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A blacking brush comprising a back with an upwardly inclined forward extension, a polisher mounted on the lower face of said back, a dauber mounted on the lower face of said extension, a box cover rigidly connected to the upper face of said forward extension, and a box bottom adapted to hold blacking and removably fitting said cover.
