FSTENING DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IILLIAM S. VOLLMER, a citizen of the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to certain improvements in fastenings particularly adapted for attaching garments, such as the waist bands of ladies skirts, shirt waists, belts and other wearing apparel.

The obj ect of my invention is to provide a fastening in which the parts can be readily attached or detached and which will be held firmly in position when attached, an d to also provide a very fiat fastening particularly advantageous in fastening waist bands of skirts.

In the accompanying drawings z-Figure l, is a face view of my improved fastening device showing the two parts attached, Fig. 2, is a side view showingl the parts in position before being locked; Fig. 3, is a section on the line 3 3, l; Fig.` 4, is a perspective view showing the two parts detached; Figs. 5 and 6, are views illustrating' a modification of the invention especially adapted for use in connection with garters, carriage traces and other devices where the parts may be slack.

Referring to the drawings, A and B are the two parts of my improved fastening, both made in the present instance of sheet metal and of the same contour.

c is a pin pressed up from the part A vand this pin is adapted to an opening b in the part B, and when the two parts are coupled together, as in Figs. 2 together by the pin.

In order to hold the pin in the opening I provide the part A with a tongue a and the part B with a tongue b and I cut each plate and press up a lip as at a2 and b2. The lips are sufficiently above the surface of the plates forming the portions A and B that when the parts are moved from the position shown in Fig. 2 to that shown in Fig. l the tongue a passes under the lip b2 and the tongue b passes under the lip a2, as clearly shownrin the cross sectional view, Fig. 3. This prevents the pin drawing out of the opening and makes a very substantial and secure fastening, and one which will be so thin as not to bulge th'e dress at the waist band to any perceptible extent, when the device is used as a fastening for the waist bands of dresses. In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a modification in which a slot e at each end is used instead of the series of holes, and a trace strap or straps may be readily attached by simply passing the ends of the strap through the -slots and attaching the ends to the body of the strap in any suitable manner.

The device shown in Figs. l to 4, both in elusive, is particularly adaptable where the fastening is subjected to strain at all times, but where it is liable to be slack, as in a garter or trace strap, Figs. 5 and 6, I preferably perfor ate one of the tongues as at d and form a proj ectionf on one of the lips so that when the tongue is forced under the lip the proj ection will enter the recess or opening d in the tongue, preventing any accidental displacement, but this means is such that the parts can be readily detached when it is deH sired to separate the parts of the fastening.

My invention is adapted to fastening garments and particularly the bands of ladies skirts and waists, but it will be understood that it can be used as a fastening for suspenders, belts, gloves and garters, carriage curtains, as well as trace straps and other parts of harness which should be secured by a quickly detachable fastening. The fastening device may be of any size and can be lhole being punched entirely through the metal of one part a depression may be made, as in Figs. 5 and 6, which will receive the pin, thus the fastening can be very economically made, only one die being required to out out the tongue and shape the lip..

I claim:-

l. The combination in a fastening device,

of two parts, one Vpart having a pin adapted to project into the plane of the other part, a lip and a tongue on each part, the lip of one part engaging the tongue of the other part when the fastener is assembled.

2, The combination in a two part fastening device made of sheet metal, in which the two parts are similar, each having a tongue and a lip, one part having a projecting pin and the other having a cavity for the reception of a pin, the tongue on one part passing under the lip on the other part, substantially as described.

3. The combination in a fastening device, of two parts, one part having a cavity and the other part having a pin adapted to the cavity, a tongue on each part, and a lip on each part under which the tongue of the other member passes when the two parts are coupled together, substantially as described.

20 that when the two parts are attached the pin will enter the cavity and the two tongues will pass under the two lips, substantially as described.

5. The combination in a fastening device, of two parts, one part having a pin adapted to project into the plane of the other part, a lip and a tongue on each part, the lip of one part engaging the tongue of the other part when the fastenerl is assembled, with means by which the tongues are engaged so as to prevent the accidental disengagement of the fastening, substantially as described.
