MONTFORD S. OHENOWETH, OF DENVER, COLORADO.
DEVICE FOR ATTACHING- HANDLES TO DOORS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21 1908.
Application filed June 1, 1906. Serial No. 319,701.
To all whom it mdy concern:
Be it known that I, MONTFORD S. OHENO- WETH,'a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Devices for Attachin Hand es to Doors; and I do declare the fol owing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin drawings, and to the letters and figures 0 reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for doors, the object of the invention being to enable a person opening a door to usher a person into an adjoining room, to swing the door 0 en and then close it again without change 0 position thus obviating the necessity of entering the room into which the door swings in order to take hold of the ordinary knob to close the door in the usual way. I
My improvement consists in an attachment of any suitable description adapted to make a hand hold, the same being connected with the door sufliciently near its hinging edge to permit the attendant standing in one room to swing the door inwardly into an adjoining room and then pull it to the closed osition without changlng his position as heretofore stated. 7
Having briefl outlined my improved construction as wel as the function it is intended to perform, I will proceed to describe the same in detail reference being made to the accompanying drawing in wh1ch is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure 1 is a view illustrating the use of my improved device, the same being applied to a door. Fig. 2 is a detail view of a suitable attachment. Fig. 3 is a view of the same looking in the direction of arrow 3 Fig. 2.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate an ordinary door; 6 the casing or frame of the door; 7 the hinges; and 8 the ordinary bolt-operating knob. To the door on the side opposite that toward which it swings when opening, is attached a suitable hand hold 9, which in this particular instance consists of an elongated nob 10, a shank 12, a fastening screw 13, and a laterally projecting lug 14. This knob is preferably made ornamental and may be of any desired attern. It is also evident that any suitabfe device which enables the attendant to grasp it and move the door both away from him and then return it to its normal position without removing his hand, will answer the purpose. In applying the device as illustrated in the drawing, the screw 13 is first'inserted in the door. A screw 15 is then passed through an opening in the lug 14, thus locking the knob against turning after it has been once adjuste The advantage of a device of this kind is very great and will be readily understood from what has heretofore been stated. All that it is necessary for the attendant to do, is to unlatch the door by turning the regular bolt-operating knob 8. He then steps to one side grasping the hand hold 9, swings the door lnwardly, allowing the visitor to enter. He then pulls the door to the closed position without moving from the stand he has taken near the. hinged edge of the door. During this operation the attendant it entirely out of the way or stands beyond the path leading through the doorway. 7
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
The herein described attachment for doors consisting of a hand hold rovided with a screw adapted to be inserted in the door, and an apertured lug projecting laterally from the hand hold and adapted to receive a fastening device to prevent the hand hold from turning.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MONTFORD S. CHENOWETH.
