PACKING FOR STUFFING-BOXES OR SIMILAR DEVICES.
Application filed December 11 1907.
To all when: it may cont-(r21 Specification of Letters Patent.
Be it known that l, AR'rnt'R RoxaLnj 'lRts'l, a subject of the liing of Great Britain and lreland, residing at St. Albans, Ilertfordshire. England, have invented new and useful erence to the form of packing which is of U- section having a thick heel on one side and a tapering llexlble tongue or hp on the other a side.
This invention has for its object the construction of such packing in such a way as to prevent the gland pressure on the packing l'rom deforming the heel portion thereof and preventing the spreading of such heel, in order to avoid lateral pressure of the heel upon the tongue of the packing.
Al'urther object of my invention is to transmit the pressure of the gland on the heel di rectly to that portion of the packing where the bend is situated and thus preserve the space between the heel and the tongue so that the fluid pressure can force the tongue against the rod or other device against which the packing form's a sliding joint.
To carry the invention into effect, 1 construct the heel of the packing on that side adjacent to the tongue of harder material than the remainder of the packing. This may be doneby varying the com )osition of the rubber constituents of which the packing is madeso that upon vulcanization the inner portion of the heel is harder in character than the rest. 01', I may form this portion of metal such as Babbitt metal or other equivalent material, or 1 may incorporate with the ordinary cloth or other material and india-rubber or the like, metal wire gauze. This hardened or stil'l'ened portion preferably stretches from the extreme heel to the curvetlportion where the tongue is l l l l 1 Patented April 21, 1908.

turned round llpon the heel so thatthe pressure ol the gland or ol the ad acent rings upon this hardened portion is transmitted direct to the curved portion without any tendency of producing del'ormation.
in order that the invention may be the better understood I will now proceed to describe the same in relation to the accompanying drawingrel'erence being had to the letters and figures marked thereon.
The drawing shows in section a gland with my improved packing placed therein.
'lhe packing consists ol layers ol' cloth (I held together by a body ol india-rubber b and having a tapering llexible lip or tongue c adapted to bear against the surl'ace ol' the rod (1. ()n the inner portion of the packing l arrange a hardened or still'ened portion 1 formed for example oi wire gauze embedded in an india-rubbcr matrix and ol' such a l'orm as to transmit pressure lrom the gland 1 through each layer ol' the packing to the next layer of packing and in such a manner as to prevent the heel g from being deformed by such pressure lillin up the space It and pressing against the lip or tongue 0.
I claim 1. In a packing of U-section having a thick heel on one side and a tapering flexible lip or tongue on the other side. the provision of a hardened or still'ened portion in the said heel through which the gland pressure is trans mitted through the various layers of packing so as to prevent the deformation of the heel by such pressure, substantially as described.
2. A packing of U-section having a thick heel on one side and a tapering flexible lip on the other side.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
