Description

PATENTED SEPT. 4, 1906.
E. G. OFELDT.
SPRING TIRE.
APPLIOATIONIILED 1130.9,1905.
At larney j ERNEST, e. OFELDT, or NYAGK, NEW YORK.
SPRING-TIRE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. .4, 1906.
Application flied December 9, 1905. Serial No. 291,119.
To ;.a,-ZZ whom, it may cmwern: 1
Be it known that I, ERNEST G. OFELDT, a resident of Nyack-on-the-Hudson, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Tires; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in metal spring-tires, the object of the invention being to provide an improved wheel-tire in which steel or other metal springs arcinte'r" osed between an inner and an outer ring '0 gcasing, said springs secured to the inner ring and bowed under tension to maintain a Uniform pressure on the outer'ring or casing throughout its circumference; and the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangejments of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
-"I n the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partly in longitudinal section, illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2 is a view in cross section, and Fig. 3 is a view of one of the springs removed.
1 represents a channel-iron ring constituting-a part of the tire, and 2 is an outer ring of greater diameter than ring 1 and connected therewith at its edges by flexible strips 3, of any; suitable material, secured to both rings, orflthis outer ring 2 and side strips 3 may constitiite a single flexible inclosing casing or outer cover, of rubber, leather, or other materi'al.
represents my improved springs, each of which has a base portion 5, to be secured by rivets 6 or otherwise to the channel-iron ring 1 between the side flanges thereof, and
' while the main portion of the spring is straight or slightly curved and diminishes in thickness' from its inner end outward when 111 pos1 tion in the tire it is bowed back and its end presses upon the next adjacent spring to al' ways exert an outward pressure on outer ring 2 and maintain a distendedtire at all times the same.
Fromthe construction above described it throughout the circumference thereof and will be seen that each spring presses at a strength.
Slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of the parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not restrict myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such slight changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is I A tire oomprisin an inner ring, anouter ring, annular flexible strips fixed at their respective edges to said rings, and a series of springs inclosed by said rings and strips, each of said springs diminishing in tlflCknGSSi-flODl one end to the other and secured at'their thicker ends. to the inner ring, each spring pressing at a point rearward of its free end against the inner face of the outer ring and pressing at its free entremity against the adjacent spring at a point rearward of the bearing of the latteraga1nst the outer r ng.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification 1n the presence of two subscnbing witnesses.
