INVENTOR WITNESSES J Bernslein.
JOHN BERNSTEIN, OF LEWISB'URG- PENNSYLVANIA. I
ARI/[OR FOR INNER TUBES 0F PNEUMATIC TIRES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 20, 1915.
Application filed August 5, 1914. Serial No. 855,217.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN BERNSTEIN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Lewisburg, in the county of Union and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Armor for Inner Tubes of Pneumatic Tires, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an armor for the inner tubes of pneumatic tires and has for its object to provide a device of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, to prevent the puncturing of the inner tube of a pneumatic tire.
Further objects of the invention are to provide an armor for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, flexible, resilient, strong, durable, comparatively light in weight, efficient in its use, conveniently set up with respect to the inner tube and outer shoe of a tire, and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of a novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a tire showing the adaptation thereto of my armor. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing a por tion of the armor.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes a rim of a tire, 2 an outer shoe and 3 an inner tube.
An armor in accordance with this in-.
vention consists of a pair of annular members 4i, 5 which are adapted to be interposed between the outer shoe 2 and inner tube 3 at apoint where the shoe is engaged by the clencher flanges 6 of the rim 1.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the The member 4 is connected to the member 5 by thin resilient flexible strips 7 which are disposed transversely with respect to the inner tube 3 and said strips are arched in contour and have a tendency whereby their ends will spring toward each other. The strips 7 may be made of rubberized canvas, leather having the necessary elasticity, or very thin metal. Each strip 7 carries a series of arrester members and each said arrester member is formed from a thin piece of metal of necessary elasticity and comprises a body portion 8 and a shank 9 formed with a series of barbs 10 which are adapted to be passed through a strip 7 and be clenched to the inner face of a strip. The shanks 9' of each series of arrester members are positioned upon the outer face of their respective strip and the body portions 8 of each series of arrester members project from its respective strip and over-lap the body portions of a series of arrester members carried by adjacent strip. The series ofar rester members of one strip are staggered with respect to the arrester members of adjacent strip. The arrester members are provided to arrest the passing of a nail, piece of glass or other sharp instrument which may pass through the outer shoe and under such construction will prevent such nail, glass or sharp instrument puncturing the inner tube.
What I claim is:-
The combination with a pneumatic tire, of an internal armor comprising a pair of side rings, flexible resilient arched strips extending transversely of the wheel and having their ends attached to said rings, a series of arrester members each having a shank formed with barbs secured by said barbs in each arched strip, and the adjacent series of arrester members overlapping each other and arranged in staggered relation.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN BERNSTEIN.
