w. c. GUILD. AUTOMOBILE INNER TUBE PROTECTOR.
APPLICATION FILED APR.19- 1916.
1 ,Q56,U115. Patented Feb. 12, 1918. v 2 SHEETS-SHEET 2| UTT @A PATENT WALTER C. GUILD, OF MABIONVILLE, MISSOURI.
AUTOMOBILE-INNER-TUBE PROTECTOR.
Application filed April 19, 1916.
1 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER C. GUILD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marionville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Automobile-Inner- Tube Prote ctors,of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tire armoring devices and has for its object the provision of a resilient armor structure disposed between an inner tube and easing whereby objects piercing the casing will be deflected and prevented from puncturing the tube.
With this and other objects in view such as simplicity, cheapness and ease of application, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is an elevation showing my device in place on a rim,
Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view therethrough,
Fig. 3 is a similar view with the casing and tube in place,
Fig. 4: is a perspective view showing a plurality of spring sections,
Fig. 5 is a perspective view showing the securing hoop on the rim, and
Fig. 6 is a detail view showing the formation of the spring sections.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the spring sections which are of approximately semi-cylindrical form. The outer ends 2 of these sections 1 are in overlapping relation and bear Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.

against the inner surface of a wear ring 3 which is concaved in cross-section to retain itself in position upon the spring sections. The inner ends of the spring sections 1 are bent to provide hooks 1 and the material is cut away as shown in Fig. 6 so these hooks will be in alinement. The sections 1 are secured together by means of a hoop 6 of wire encircling the rim 5 as shown.
In use, my device is placed within a casing, a lining 7 of heavy duck is inserted to cover the springs, and the inner tube is then inserted. The assembled casing, protector and tube are then applied to the rim in the usual manner and secured as by the ordinary looking ring 8. It will be seen that the hoop 6 will slide freely onto the rim.
An object piercing the casing will be deflected upon striking the overlapping sections 1 and a puncture of the inner tube will thus be prevented.
Having thus described my invention, I claim In combination with a rim, casing and inner tube, an inner tube protector comprising a ring disposed within the casing and concave in cross section, a hoop surrounding the supporting rim, and a plurality of resilient metallic sections formed on their inner ends with hooks engaged about said hoop and having their outer ends bearing against the inner surface of said ring, said sections being in overlapping relation to each other and partially encircling the inner tube.
Signed at Marionville, in the county of Lawrence and State of Missouri, this 17th day of April, 1916.
WALTER O. GUILD.
