UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BENJAMIN \VOLF, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BOOK-PROTECTO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 424,241, dated March 25, 1890.
Application filed NovemberZZ, 1889. Serial No. 331,178. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN WVOLF, a citi-- zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented anew and useful Improvement in Book -'Protectors, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.
My invention consists of a protector for the edges of the covers of a book, the construction and advantages of the same being hereinafter fully set forth.
Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a book-protector embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of a portion of the same on an enlarged scale and sepa rated from the book. Fig. 3 represents a section of a portion on line was, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4 represents a perspective View of a modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
I Referring to the drawings, A desi nates a book of usual construction.
B designates a protector for the edges of the covers of said book, the same being formed of achanneled or angular piece of metal whose sides or limbs are serrated or toothed, as at O O, the points of the teeth having spurs D thereon, said spurs projecting toward each other, it being seen that the teeth 0 of one side or limb of the protector are alternate with those of the other side or limb, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2.
The protector is placed over the edges of firmly connected with the covers and the edges of the latter and adjacent portions of the sides being sheathed, clad, or bound with metal, the effect of which is evident. The teeth C also engage with the sides of the covers or are partly embedded therein, thus increasing the hold of the protector therewith.
Owing to the alternate arrangement of the teeth, as has been stated, the protector is not liable to be broken through and through, it being noticed that the point of the space between two adjacent teeth is coincident with the solid portion of the head of the opposite tooth; hence should the metal at said point break or crack it is resisted by the opposite head, and hence the entire separation of the protector is prevented and its durability accordingly increased.
In Fig. 4 I show a protector in which the teeth are directly opposite to each other.
Having thus described my invention, what of a book, a channeled or angular piece of material having its sides or limbs formed with teeth which alternate on the opposite sides or limbs of the piece, substantially as described.
BENJAMIN WOLF.
