WILLIAM M. GANFIELD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 113,252, dated April 4, 1871.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEAM AND HYDRAULIC PAcKINGs.
.The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent -and making part ofthe same.
I, `W1LLIAM M. OANFIELD, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Steam and Hydraulic Packing, of which the following is a speciiication, l
The nature of my invention consists of a circular succession of braids, with a central elastic cord; between the braids is inserted a lubricating compound, patented by me under date of December 27,1870, and which, in combination with my braids and central elastic cords, forms my invention.
In the accompanying drawing which makes a part of this speciiication` Figure 1 is a side view of my packing.
Figure 2 is a sectional view on the line A B.l f Figure 3 is a sectional View on the line C D.
Figures 4 and 5 are detached views of the central cords used. i
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction.
I first take the central elastic'cords C or C', the cord C, fig.` 4, being composed of hemp, or the cordrC, iig. 5, of I nda rubber. These cords form the foundation of the packing, and are used for the purpose of giving the same proper elasticity, in order to make tight joints.
I now form over the cords C or C' a circular hemp braid b, on the surface of which I place a coat of my compound, P, composed of the ingredients contained in the first, second, or third clairnsdof my'patentof December 27, 1870, which is comprisedof tallow,
myrtle wax, Brazilian' wax, beeswax, rJapanese wax. German black-lead, American graphite, and asbestus,
Or, American graphite, myrtle wax, talllow, beeswax and Brazilian wax.
Or, German black-1ead,asbestus, Japanese wax, tal- 1ow, and beeswax. i
I then form another circular braid b1, and again place a coating, P, of my compound, over which is formed the outer circular braiding b, or a succession of braiding and my lubricating compound. Thisjprocess is continued until I form the packingof the diameter desired. v p
A packing formed in this manner-may be,r made of any size to suit the use intended, and isfvery pliable, and impervious to either steam or water, and possesses great durability.
I do not wish to claim forming a packing oi a succession of braids, as I am awarethat steam and hydraulic packing has been formed in that manner;
but-'- u v What I claim,` and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
