GALEND'ER ROLLER. APPLICATION FILED MAY 25; 1906- l llll hlllll' llllllllll a l/4 w. s 2/ b A f1 Hes ' FIGA.
HARRY BOSTELL, OF DUSSELDORF-OBERCASSEL, GERMANY.
CALENDER-ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 8, 1907.
Application filed May 26, 1906. serial No. 318,947.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY BOSIELL, manager, a citizen of the German Empire, and a resident of Dusseldorf-Obercassel, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Calender-Rollers, of which the following is a specification.
At present packing-rings are used for packing the joints in calender-rollers with elastic covers. This packing is however not suflicient to prevent the lubrieating-oil from getting at the cover along the axle,
because this kind of packing can never be absolutely oiland airtight, owing to the porosity of the metal, to the high working pressure of the calender, the great revolving speed of the roller, the high degree of and the fluctuation in temperature and further in consequence of the surfaces of contact between axle, enddisk, packing-rings etc.
According to this invention cavities are provided in the bore or the outer surfaces of the end disk, or in the axle, or in both these parts, which are filled in with a packing material, for example a ring or a string, which will resist oil, heat, moisture, acids and the like, such as for example asbestos, klingerit, asbestonit, cotton, hemp, graphite, india-rubber, leather, metals, or some similar packing material.
In the accompanying drawing the invention is shown applied to the axle of a calender-roller. Figures l to 4. representing in vertical section through the left hand end of the roller four modifications of the invention with and without cavities. Figs. 5 to 8 representing in vertical section the right hand end of the roller corresponding to Figs. 1-4.
In the drawing 0 is the axle, la the end disk, a and b are the outer edges of the end disk, and o is the packing material. The cavities may be provided at various places of the axle and end disk respectively.-It would be the most practical to provide, as shown in Figs. 2 to 4, a conical cavity in the end disk, the base of which is turned towards the middle or the ends of the locking ring or to provide for example a conical packing material before the inner edge of the end disk may be prolonged into the axle c. The dotted lines in Figs. 1 to 4 indicate the cavity which may be provided in the axle.-Fig. 5 shows a continuous ringshaped cavity of the axle, while according to Fig. 6 the axle has two separate cavities of square or another cross section, for example one with packing 1) between axle and end disk and the other, with packing 'u between axle, end disk and cover. By way of example Fig. 7 shows the conical cavities in the axle with packing 1), 1) applied to the conical locking ring connection and Fig. 8 represents the same applied to the nutlocking.
If there should be a packing disk of square cross section, arranged between end disk and roller-cover, it has to be fitted into a ring groove of the axle or disk, as otherwise the lubricant oil will get to the cover below the packing disk or washer. To attain the purpose of the present invention, a cavity filled in with packing material or without cavity conical or collar packing material has to be provided irgside the roller for the oil and airtight packing of the surfaces of contact between axle, end disk and roller-cover.
The pressure of the cover is exerted in the direction of the arrows, whereby the packing material is well pressed into the cavities, or if providing conical packing material or another with collar against the inner edge of the locking ring although tightly packing the axle, end-disk etc, so that a displacement of the packing material is impossible.
This new packing can be used with any of the known locking systems without any alteration of the locking device and it may be applied to any of the paper, asbestos or cotton calender-roller already in use.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
Improved looking for calender-rollers comprising in combination the roller axle having cavities inside the and disk and suitable packing; material in said cavities, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In'witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
HARRY BOSTELL.
