Description

No. 884,493. PATENTED APR. 14, 1908. J. KAHN.
STAIB. TRBAD;
APPLICATION IILBD 8111913, 1907.
T13 .31 I witnesses Inventor a Rttomey;
- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIUS KAHN, 0F DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
STAIR-TREAD.
Application filed September To all 107mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIUs KAHN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and Improved Stair-Tread, of whichthe following IS a specification.
My invention consists in a ribbed metal plate, preferably of rolled steel, the ribs bemg sharp and provided with properly spaced buttons or knobs.
It further consists in forming these bosses of lead or other material upon which leather does not easily slip.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stair tread. -F' 2 is a section of stair tread with a modi ed form of rib. Fig. 3 is a view of another form of rib. 4 is a cross section of rib showin% the soft lead button or knob in position.
imilar reference characters refer to like parts throu bout the several views.
The trea shown in Fig. l is formed with parallel ribs 1 connected by a web 2. The ribs 1 are triangular with straight sides and between these ribs are beads or ridges 3 which render the treads easier to clean. Buttons or knobs 4 properly 8 aced along the tops of the ribs I prevent t e feet from slipping sidewise along the ribs, while the ribs prevent transverse slipping. As the buttons are larger in area than the ribs next Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 14, 1908, a, 1907. Serial No.391,l)1.
to them, the buttons will wear more slowly, and until they are worn down to where they are no wider than the ribs, will always pro- Ject.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a web 5, ribs 6 having concave sides, and buttons 7 on the ribs. The rib 8 in Fig. 3 has convex sides.
Instead of forming the buttons of the same metal as the remainder of the tread, I may form them of lead or other soft metal. In that case the ribs 10 are formed with roperly spaced holes and the plugs 11 0 soft metal are forced into them.
The form and size of the ribs and the spacing of the buttons can be varied as desired.
Iavin now explained my improvements, what I e aim as my invention and desire to ssecure by Letters Patent is;
1. A rolled steel stair tread comprising a web and parallel ribs on the web, ant buttons or knobs on the ribs.
2. A metal stair tread comprising a web and ribs of steel, the ribs having properly Spaced holes, and soft metal-plugs seated in said holes.
In testimony whereof I have signed this application in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JULIUS KAHN. Witnesses: I
M. K. KENNEDY, E. N. PAGELSEN.
