DESIGN FOR A TIRE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Design No. 27,830, dated November 9, 1897. Application filed June 25, 1897. Serial No. 642,348. Term of patent 14 years.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES I. KELLY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented and produced a new and original Design for Elastic Cushion-Tires, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part thereof.
In said drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a tire embodying my design. Fig. 2 shows a section taken transversely through the elastic cushion-tire formed in accordance with my design, together with a portion of the length of such tire illustrated in perspective.
The transverse configuration or outline of the elastic cushion-tire shown in said drawings is substantially as follows: The lower or base portion of the tire comprises the bottom face A and the two side portions B B, which latter are on planes arranged to diverge upwardly from the bottom face A.
The upper portion of the elastic tire is substantially in cross-section an arch or proximate semicircle, formed, however, by an irregular line composed of a succession of reverse eurves forming segments of circles, as follows, to wit: The tread proper or extreme upper portion of the tire is formed in outline by the segment 0, which at opposite sides merges in the reversely-curved segments D D. The segments D D are succeeded by and merge in the segments E E, which latter are on curves reverse to the curves of the segments D D. The segments E E are succeeded by and merge in the segments F F,whieh latter are on curves reverse to the curves of the segments E E and arranged to intersect the planes on which the side portions 13 l are formed.
The essential feature of my design consists of the tire formed in cross-section with a base having upwardly-diverging side portions and an upper arching or substantially semicircular portion composed of a continuous series of segments successively on reverse curves, one of such segments, which is the highest in point of position, being outwardly eonvexed and arranged at the tread proper, two of such segments, which are the lowest in point of position, being eoneaved and arranged, respectively, at opposite sides of the tire and adjacent to the base portion thereof, while between said segment at the tread and each segment adjacent to the base are concaved and convex segments relatively reverse to one another and to the said highest and lowest segments.
