PORTABLE PARTITION FOR BEDS.

Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ELLwooD E. Hor- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Portable Partition for Beds, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in beds, or that class of furniture used in sleeping, or the disposure of the body in a recumbent position, and is particularly applicable to such beds as are used by two persons, commonly known as double beds.

The objects of my invention are: First, to provide a bed partition whereby each occupant is restrained from inadvertently annoying or disturbing the other by motion of the body or limbs in slumber. Second, to rovide means whereby an occupant is confined to his particular portion of the bed, whether the remaining portion be occupied or not. Third, to provide such means in forms readily portable and instantly adjustable to any style of bed whatever, on which is used a common, or special mattress, and which can be used without in any way interfering with the ordinary and usual disposal of bed clothing. Fourth, to provide such apparatus in forms unobjectionable in appearance when in use, capable of being conveniently disposed from view when not required and which can be collapsed and compacted into small compass for conveyance. These and other minor objects are attained by the novel construction and combination of parts here inafter described and shown in the accompanying drawings, forming part of these specifications, and in which:

Figure 1, is a perspective view of a bed with my invention applied. Fig. 2, is a similar view of the lower portion folded for disposal or transportation. Fig. 3, is a similar view of the upper portion folded for disposal or transportation. Fig. 4, is a view of a modified form of construction. Fig. 5, is a similar view of another modification. Fig. 6, is a perspective view of the loop or band about the plates, and Fig. 7, is an end view of the modified form shown in Fig. 5.

Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

My invention consists of the partition plate members, 1, 2 and 3, longitudinally disposed on the mattress A, and connected at their adjacent ends by suitable bands or clamps 4, so arranged that the partitions ma be extended in length or contracted at will: to suit varying sizes of beds.

The lower side of the head member 1, is formed to pass over the bolster, or under pillow, at 1, and, extending beyond the edge of the mattress, be guided by the groove formed between the vertical members 5, and 5, each of which are attached by means of the hinges 6, and 6, to the vertical plate 7, which in turn is attached by means of the hinge 7, to the horizontally disposed plate member 8, the same being disposed below the mattress and over the springs, or mattress support, while pivotally connected to the plate 8, are the leaf members 9, and 9, in such manner that the said leaf members may be spread outwardly, thereby affording a footing to support the partition; the said plate members may be folded when not in use. as shown in Fig. 2.

At the lower edge, and extreme end, of'the partition plate member 3, are similar vertical members 10, and 10, connected by the hinges 11, and 11,to the plate 12,connected, in turn, by the hinge 12, to the horizontally disposed plate member 13, having the leaves 14, and 14, pivotally attached to the head support, as before described.

As the plate members 1, 2 and 3, are arranged to slide past each other and the leaf members fold on themselves, it will be evident that the whole apparatus can be folded and thus contained in small compass, as is indicated in Figs. 2, and 3, making it readily containable in a common trunk or suit case. It is also noticeable that absolutely no permanent attachment is made to the bed frame C, or the mattress, and that it in no wise interferes with the bed clothing, the same being placed over the device as usual, the device dis osed directly above the mattress.

hen t e device is not in use, the plates 1, 2 and 3, may be removed and the vertical members 5, and 5, and 10, and 10, may be turned so as to lie closely on the mattress and when so positioned are not visible.

Should it be desirable to cover the sides of the partition member with cushions or pads, it can be done without difficulty, but, for sanitary reasons, is not thought preferable.

In the form illustrated in Fig. 4, a single piece is so constructed as to have a vertical member 1, extend the length of the mattress,

turned at its lower end and turned horizontally to reach under the mattress, as at 15, being sustained in proper position thereby.

In the form shown in Figs. 5, and 7, a special form of mattress is indicated, divided longitudinally, and the partition plate made sufficiently deep to reach from the lower side of the mattress (that is from its support) to a suitable height above in this case support is obtained by means of the feet 16, and 16, the same being pivotally attached to the lower ed e'of the plates 1, and 2, in such manner t at they can be turned laterally, at will, or act as supports, while the several sections are united by loop 4, the intention being to form a permanent partition for use With beds in homes or hotels, when the same are required.

Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a portable partition for beds, the combination with a bedstead and a mattress thereon, of a plurality of plates extending lengthwise over' the mattress, upon their edges and in slidable connection one with another, horizontal arms below said mattress and vertically disposed arms pivotally connected thereto, at each end of said mattress, having means combined therewith adapted to maintain said plates in position.

2. In a portable partition for beds, the

' combination with a bedstead and mattress thereon, of a partition adapted to be positioned between longitudinal sections of the said mattress, extending above the surface of the same, said partitions comprising sections adapted to move longitudinally with reference to each other and connecting means combined therewith.

3. In a bed partition, the combination with a mattress, of a plate member disposed lengthwise thereon, upon its edge and having a portion turned rentrantly, bent and adapted to embrace one end of said mattress, said ortion of the plate being disposed be low t e vertical portion.

4. In a portable artition for beds, the combination with a bedstead and mattress, of a partition adapted to rest upon its edge, adjustable lengthwise of the said mattress and detachable means of maintenance at each end of said mattress, arranged transversely thereof, said means comprising members pivotally connected and adapted to be compactly folded when not in use.
