IMPROVEMENT IN HORSE-SHOE-NAIL CLINCHER.

I *Or-M To all whom it may concern Be it known that We, E. E. FISHER and WILLIAM H. MACK, of Indianola, in the county of Vermilion, and State of Illinois, have invented anew and improved l-[orse-Shoe-Nail Olincher; and We do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will .enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in whichvFigure 1 is a side view of our improved horse-shoenail clincher.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding Our invention has for its object to furnish a simple, convenient, and effective instrument for turning down and clinching horse-shoe nails, so as to obviate the necessity for the use of the rasp, hammer, and clinching-iron, while doing the work neater and better; and

It consists, principally, in the construction of' the adjustable and detachable jaw, and in its combination with the other parts ofthe instrument, as hereinafter more fully described.

Aare the handles of the instrument, which are bent into' about the shape shown in iig. 1, so as to bring them into a more convenient position when fusing the instrument.

B is the stationary jaw, which is made with a hook,M

or projection upon its end, for taking hold ofthe head ofthe nail, and which -is curved', as shown in fig. 1, to bring the said hook, or projection into a more favorable position for taking hohl ofthe head of the nail.

C is thc other jaw, which is made detachable and adjustable by means of a set-screw, D, which passes through a slot in thcshank-of the said jaw, and screws into the iin-ward. end of one of the handles A, as shown in figs. l, il, and 2S.

'.i'ue detachable jaw' C is kept in line with the handles and stationary jaw, by a guide-pin attached to the said projecting end of the handle, and projecting through the slot in the said detachable jaw O.

The jaw C is made slightly curved, as shown-in the drawings, and is provided with teeth upon its inner, or convex side, to take hold of the nail to be turned down and clinched.

This construction enables the jaw C to be extended or contracted, according to the size of the foot to be operated upon, so that the same instrument maybe easily and quickly adjusted for use in shoeing a large or small horse, as occasion may require.

The adjustable toothed jaw C should be made of steel, but the other parts of the instrument may be madeof wrought, or malleable cast-iron, as may be desired or convenient.

We are aware that the heads of horse-shoe-nail clinchersvhave been made solid with the handles, but this construction is objectionable, because the heads, when worn, or abraded by use, cannot be replaced without making a new handle.

By our invention this diiiculty is avoided, as the head can be replaced by removing it from the handle.

We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvementin horse-shoe-nail clinchers, the adjustable and detachable toothed jaw C, substantially as herein shown and described and for the purpose set forth.
