Description

@eine faire mm @frire JOHN BWILDER, OF MANNSVILJE, NEW YORK,`ASSIGNOR T0 HIMSELF, H. W. SH'EPARD, AND GEORGE A. HUGGINS, 0F SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent AToI'iQZS, dated Jztlyld, 1868'.
It/MOVEMENT In eLINeEINe-nlrrnns.
fille Segnale raamt tu in' tlgtse tttters ntent mit marking pnt rf the same To ALL wHoM Ir,l MAY coroner;
i -Bc'l it'lrnown that IVIO-HN B. WILDER; of Vlllannsville, county of Jefferson, and State of New York, have invented eertaiunew auduseful Improvements in Clinching-llippers; and I do hereby declare that the following lis a. full, clear, `and'exactd'escription of the same, vreference being had to the accompanying drawing-,and the Ylettersof reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in whichp Figure 1 is a side view of the lnippers.
Figure 2 is a section on line@ xjof 1. y p Figure 3 is a view of the nippers applied to a horses foot and shoe, exhibiting the method of clinchin'g` -the nail.
The nature' of my inventionr consists iu combining,.in u. peculiar-shaped pair ot nippel-s, a cutting-device, to cut'ol" the endsot` nails, rods, rivets, Ste., anda curved jaw, so shaped as to draw'dowu or up the ends of these severalo'bjeets, so fas'to clinchor rivet them by a quick movement, thus obviating the use of a hammer and hand- Y anvil, such as are necessary in the ordinary method-oficlinching.
Whenapplied to'horseshoeing, this implemcntscrves the purpose of several other itools, `and, with the shoeinglhammer, is all that is requisite. n With these two any farmer, traveller, or other person can temporarily *fasten a looseshoe, clinch n nail while on'the road, or while plowing or-carting, and so savemany valuable hours. Heretofore, the necessity of having.. so many shoeing-tools, and t-he want of skillfin holding the foot ofthe horse while being shod, have prevented many from undertaking` what appeared to be a very 'difficult tasltt Now, on the road, at the farm,4or any other place distant from a shop, with my improved nipper-and elineher, any ingenious person canfasten the shoes, when they become'loosc, in the easy manner following:-
Place the horses foot on a. plank or. block, or any firm plaeea little elevated, if such a position can he Obtained, and, 'by putting the straight or 'lower jaw under the shoe, well up against the cutter, and then, by"
bringing `the-curved or upper jaiv over the end of the nail, by a firm pressure ofthe handles,andhringing them together, the'felinch will be immediately drawn down over the hooi` as neatly as when doneby the hammer in tire'old way. It' a. file should be used, those acquainted withits use can make a more finished and permanent clinch than by the hammer.
The cutting-edges are for the purpose of' cutting oil'- 'to the nentrsize the ends o f nailsgiholts, or. rivets, and
in horsc-shoe nails does away -ivith the old slovenly method of twisting with the claw of the hammer; thusl leaving a ragged end, which too often causes the horse to cut his opposite leg. By myl nippers` the nail i'scut.,
neatly te the exact length, and, being firmly driven, the clinch" is made, and the nail; by the process, more firmly drawn in than before, whereas in the old manner of hammer-clinching, thenail was invariably driven back, and the farrier was under the necessity of again driving home," and again clinching-and again driving,
so that the frequent driving back and forth loosened the nnilin the hoof. Every one who has ever driven ashoenuil, or witnessed the operation, can testify to this bad e`etwhich I non' obviate.
To enable others skilled inthe art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation. 7 Y
Ais the nipper. a is the lower or `straightjawg-a', the curved jaw or elincher. and b are the cutters, which each have :t shank with screw-threads, und which passes through holesin. the jaws, well strengthened by shoulders underneath,l andrnuts c and c1, tolteep them in place, and by which the cutters can be quickly removed for sharpening, Src. b2 ZF are small lips on the cutters, to guide the nails. :Zd ure' the clinched endsvof Ythe horseshoe nails. e is the shoulder, to receive the shoe or other surface to be clinched or riveted, Ab'eing'flush with the cutter, and extending the joggle to hold the same. l
Having thus fully described my invention, what 'I claim therein as new, `and desire to secure by 'Letters Patent of the United States, isil 1. The cutter'sb and b1, when th'e same are so applied to `a pair of clinchingmippers that'thcy can be operated Substantially as described, as and for thepurpose specified.
2. The cutters andb, jaws a and a', and shoulder e, when the same are arranged suhstautiallyas described, as and for the purpose specified. I Y y l In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specificationV in the presence el' two subscribing witnesses.
