r0 ALL WHOM IT MAY coNo'nNN; 1
Be it known that I, HENRY M. CLOSE, of Ghariton, in the county of Lucas, and State of-Iowa, have invented a new and useful Instrument for Sharpening the Toes and Calks of Horse-Shoes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying:drawings,
in which .Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2, a plan view. I The nature of my invention consists in making an instrument by the use of which the toes and calks of horse-shoes can be sharpened without the removal of the same from the foot of the animal.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proeeed to describe its construction and operation! In the drawings, A represents the upper and A! the lower handle of the instrument, by the use of which it is operated, B the belt which secures the two together, and O the nut which keeps the bolt in its proper position. D is thejaw o'r extension of the'handle A, on which. is the raised block or rest E, and at thelower end of the jaw D is the upright, F, through which the set-screw G passes.
H represents the cutter, which is an extension of the handle A; I, a section of a horse-shoe and its toe.
vThe operation of the instrument is as follows: The shoe is placed over the upright, F, with the too or calk resting upon the block or rest E. The position of the toe or call: can be adjusted by the set-screw G, so that the cutter will take off whatever thickness it is desired to remove. The cutter H works closely to the block E, by which means a. shear cut is obtained.
When the shoe is placed in the instrument, the handles are open, or extended, thus bringing the edge of the cutter unto the position on the toe or calk oithc shoe where it isintendedto commence cutting, and when, in this position, the handles are pressed together, it gives a downward movement to the cutter, which makes a keen cut.
The cutter may be made of any width desired. By taking of the nut C, the bolt H can be removed for the purpose of sharpening the cutter H. What-I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The jaw D, with the block E and the upright, F, substantially as described. c 2. The combination of the cutter H, block or rest E, and set-screw G, substantially as and for the purpose described.
