Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 24, 1908.
Application filed August 27, 1907. Serial No. 390,375.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES HORNSHAW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cement Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to fence posts and one of the principal objects of the same is to provide a concrete or cement post having embedded therein a Wooden core, the edges of which lie flush with two sides of the 0st to provide means for fastening the step es for securing the fence wires thereto.
Another object of the invention is to pro-- vide a molded fence post with a wooden core, said wooden core having openings therein through which the cement or plastic material passes to anchor the core in place, said wooden core being coated with a preservative compound.
These and other objects may be attained by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a fence post made in accordance with my invention and showing a short section of wire fastening connected thereto. Fig. 2 'is a vertical section taken through the post and core. Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken at right angles to Fig. 2 and showing the wooden core in elevation. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a post of circular form in cross section the construction being substantially identical with the other figures of the drawing.
Referring to the drawing for a more specific description of my invention, .the numeral 1 designates a concrete or cement post having embedded therein a core 2 of wood, said core being preferably treated with a coat of tar or other similar preservative compound and said core having a series of openings 3 so that thecement or other plastic ma* terial forming the post will pass through said. openings to anchor the core in place.-
As shown in Fig. 3, it will be seen that the core 2 lies substantially flush with the two opposite sides of the post and that the ocment ties 4 pass through openings 3 in the core to hold the same in place. By means of this construction the staples 5 required for the purpose of securing the line wires 6 of a fence may be driven directly into the outer surface of the core at the required distances apart depending upon the character of the fence desired.
As shown in Fig. 4, the post 1 is circular in cross section, and the core 2 is also tapered from the lower to the upper end thereof and said core lying flush at its opposite edges with the body portion 1 of the post.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that fence posts made in accordance with my invention can be produced at comparatively slight cost, that means are provided for connecting theline Wires of the fence thereto and that the core is thoroughly anchored within the post and provided with a protective coating.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A fence post formed of plastic material and having embedded therein a wooden core, said wooden core having its edges lying flush with opposite sides of the post to rovide means for the insertion of staples for liolding the line wires of the fence in place.
2. A fence post comprising a cement body portion, an embedded wooden core, said core having openings therein through which the cement extends to anchor the core in place, said core lying flush at its edges with the opposite sides of the post.
3. A concrete fence post having embedded therein a Wooden core treated with a preservative coat or dressing, said wooden core having openings therein through which the cement passes to anchor the core in the post, and the outer edges of said core lying flush with the opposite sides of the-post.
