COMPOSITE FENCE-POST'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 741,579, dated october 13, 1903'.

To all whom it may concern: Beit known that I, RICHARD D. HAYWARD, a citizen of the United States,residing at Warsaw, in the county of Kosciusko and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Composite Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in composite fence-posts and the like. y
The object of my invention is to provide a A composite post having a plastic base supporting a separable wooden post, the upper part of which may be readily replaced when rotted and the lower portion embedded in the plastic base, and thereby protected from decay.
Another object lies in providing a composite post that will be strong, durable, efficient, and one that will be simple and inexpensive to produce.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, a' preferable embodiment of which is described'in the specification and illustrated in the drawings, wherein-v Figure 1 is a front elevation of my composite post. (Fig. 2 is an end elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4 of Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view `taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3. Fig. 6' is a perspective View of the post-supporting stirrup; and Fig.
7 is a Vertical sectional View taken at right angles to Fig. 5 and on the line 6 6, as indicated in Fig. 3.
In the Adrawings the numeral 1 designates the base of the post, which is formed ot some plastic material,.such as cement, and is made in any suitable shape-for instance, frustoconical, as shown in the drawings. I
The post is preferably formed of two pieces through the pieces and securely clamp them between the straps 6. It will be noticed that the foot or body portion of the stirrup is tapered upwardly to the point Where the pieces 3 and 4 join each other, and that the lower piece 4 is taperedto t in the stirrup. Such a construction provides an enlargedpfoundation for the wooden post and a core around which the plastic base may be easily molded.-
, W'hen the post is made, the pieces 3 and 4 are placed within the stirrup 5 and secured between the straps 6 by the bolts 7. This structure is then placed in a mold and the plastic base 1 cast around the post. Thus it will be seen that the piece 4 is practically entirely surrounded by the `plastic base and thereby protected fromdecay. The upper portion 3 of the post joinsfthe lower piece 4 -j ust a little below the top of the base, thereby protecting the top of the lower piece 4. VThe fence is vsecured to the face of the upper piece l 3, which is placed parallel thereto.
'When it is desired to replace the part 3,
`permanent structure having once been placed in the ground and which obviates the necessity of removing the same when it is desired to replace the portion above the ground.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact details of construction herein set forth, as I may make various changes in the same without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what. I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isf 1. The combination with the plastic base of a post, of a metallic stirrup provided with straps and supported in the base, a separable post comprising two pieces arranged in the stirrup, one of said pieces embedded in the body of the stirrup and embedded Within the 1o base, and bolts for securing the pieces in the base, and bolts for fastening the post in the stirrup, substantially as described. stirrup, substantially as described.
