Description

i UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEre-E.
ll'UvGl-I P. LIBHART, OF TROUP, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONll-HAl'il" TO .HENRY IQDWARDS, 0F
recur,
TEXAS.
PLASTIC FE NGE-POST.
Annlication lerl March 2,
To all whom it may Concern.' t
Be it knownthat I, HUGH l?. LrBuAn'r, a. citizen of the United States, residingl at Troup, in the county of Smith and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful linprevenientsvin Plastic Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specifieatir-in, reference being had therein to the accompanying` drawing.
My invention relates to improvements in fence posts constructed of plastic material and to means for securing fence Wires and rails thereto.
One object of the invention is to provide a strong and durable plastic fence post which inay be produced at a comparatively lsmall eost.
Another object of the `invention is to pro vide a post of this character with means whereby either fence wires or wooden fence rails may be readily attacheeI to it.
Another object of the invention is to provide-fence rail attaching,` blocks which are entirely embedded within the body of the post so 'that they will be protected from lthe weather. v
Another objet-t of the invention is to provide an improved double loop or eye by which a fence wire may be secured to the post.
The above and other objects are accom plished by the improved construction illustrated in the aceompanyingiV drawings, in
Vwhich.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my iinproved 'fence post, showing fence wires attached thereto; Fig. 2 is aivertical section through the saine on the plan'e indicated by the line' 22 in Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the plane of the line I 3 in Fig. 2,' Fig. t is a perspective View ofthe reinlorcing members and the fence rail attaching blocks which are ein bedded in the post.
My improved fence post comprises a body 1 molded of' cement, concrete or other suitable plastic material and preferably of square or rectangular forni in cross section. lThe'l body l'is also preferably tapered longitudinally from its lower end. to its topwhich lat-V ter is rounded as shown at 2 n1 Fig. l..- Upon vopposite sides of the base or lower end of the post, l. preferably provide laterally or horizontallyl projecting ribs or flanges Il which serve to effectively anchor the post in the y Specification yof Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 24, 1907.
1907. Serial No. 360,206.
ln order to strengthen the post, I embed or niold in it a suitable reinforcing frame, .the preferred form ofwhich is clearly shown in Fig. 4.. tudinally extending strandsof barbed Wire together by blocks 4 of wood or other suitable material to which fence rails of Wood, 0r the like, may be secured by nails or similar fastening devices. The two forward. reinforcing members or strands 5, 6 are arranged upon opposite sides of the blocks 4 `and they are preferably formed of a single piece of barbed Wire by bending it upon itself at its' center to 'form the coil or loop 7 and so as to v have its two ends parallel; the lower extremities of said ends are preferably bent vat right angles andin opposite -directions, as shown at 8 in Fig. 4, and they may be of such length as,to project into the ancliorflanges 3. The third reinforcing,r member or strand 9 .is arranged centrally upon theI rear faces of the, block and has its upper and lower ends 10, l1
rearward f, as clearly shown in Fig. 4. The,
cured to the blocks 4 by staples 12, as clearly shown in Fig. lVhile the blocks 4. may be of any shape, l preferably make thorn rectangular with their lupper and'lower ends beveled in opposite directions so that they are of dove-tailform. They are so embedded in the bodyofthe post that their smaller frontfaces will lie close to the frontl'ace of the post 1, but at the same time be entirely covered by a 4thin layer of cement, as shown at 13. This layer 13 'is of sullicient thickness to prevent moisture from reaching t-h`e block but at the saine time, is thin, enough to perrnit nails or similar fastenings to be driven through it and into the block for the pur# pose of attaching wooden fence rails, fence wires, or the like. Any number of the blocks.' 4 may be embedded. in eachfpost and they. are preferably arranged centrally between double loops or eyes 14 which are especially provided for the. attachment of fence wires. While the centralarrangement ofthe. blocks serves to locate then l may more effectively aceomplish this, and especially when the blocks .-1 re arranged at varying intervals throughout the length of the post, by forni'- ingl upon the front face ol the post scores or imlenlitions-l.
Having thus described my invention what arranged in triangular relation and secured bent'in opposite directions or forwardly and This frame consists of three longistrands or members 5, (i, 7 are preferably sei I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
.A fencepost comirising a body of plastic material and a rein orcing frame embedded thereinand consisting of longitudinal reinforcing vmembers arranged in angular relation and" plurality of we ge shaped blocks arranged between and secured to said members,'saidibl0cks being spaced a art by said members and eaeh'having one o its faces arranged adjacent to one face of the post and covered by a thin layer of plastic material of which the body is composed', whereby fastening devices may be drlven through said layery and into the blocks, substantlally as de* 15 scribed. l In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
