Application filed July 8, 1907. -Serial No. 382,456.
Be ii known ein i, Em NE ri. Meest.
New Orleans, in' the parish of Orleans andl State of lllouisian'a;=y have invented new and useful Improvements in Stockings, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to stockings of the kind that are equip ed with means for the attachment of stoclliging supporters; and it has for its object to provide a stocking of the class stated embodying such a construction to the stocking the pull exerted by the supporter on the stockin is distributed around iat way the use of the supporter in connection with the stocking is riorating the stocking.
Another object of the invention is the provision o a stocking provided with such an equipment that the connection oi a garment supporter to the stocking does not entail en gageinent of the sup orter with any portion of the textile materia ot' the stocking.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be fully understood from the followare read in connection with the drawings ac companying and forming part ot this specifi- Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating a stocking constituting the' preferred embodiment of my invention as the same appears when in position on the limb of a wearer and connected with a stocking supporter. ilig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction indicated by the ar row. Fig, 3 is aview illustrating the arrangement of the reinforcing band and the depend` lng reinforcing and strain-distributing stri is of my improvements relative to the torti e materialvof the stocking and precedent to the connection of the said reinforcin band and strips to the said textile materia Fig. 4 is a view of a modified form of my invention in which the depending reinforcing strips are other material of the stocking. A
Referring by letter to the said drawings, and more particularly to Figs. 1, 2 and 3, thereof: A is a stocking Whichis shown as a ladies stocking, and may be and preferably is of the ordinary generai construction. 'lhc textile materiai of seid stocking turned l. i.
downward and inward at the topY of the stocking and is sewed Vor otherwise attacl-ied'v to the inside ol. the major portion of the stocking, as best showny in FiggZfjto form a' hein B, and in the hein `thus'produced isar"y ranged the reinforcing` bander tcp strip C of ably by quilting the said hein B and the strip' (l as illustrated. When the hem B 'and the top strip C are .quilted itwill he aaparent that a strong connection of the strip (ll to the textile material oi the stocking effected,
and at the saine time the finished appearance oi the stocking as a Whole is enhanced;
Permanently attachedtoor formed integral with the reinioreing hand or strip l) are three (more or lees) de' ending reinforcing strips D oi' canvas or otllier strong material. These depending strips D are arranged equis' distant and are ermanently attached .to lthe inner side of t e stocking, preierabl b quilting the strips as illustrated, Where y it` will he seen that wliena stocking supporter is connected with the top strip or band C in the manner hereinafter described, the pull exerted by the supporter will hevdistrihuted through a large portion'of the textile nia,.- terial of the stocking, and hence the liability of the said textile material being torn .or stretched by the supporter is reduced to a p reinforcing i minimum. When desired depending reinforeing strips D formed h welts woven into the textile or other material of the stocking and attached at their u )per end to the top strip or hand C may e employed as shown in Fig. fi in lieu ot' f,the strips D, Without involvingI departure from the scope of in invention as defined in the claims appendec. E E are studs tiered in a permanent man- .nerto the on reinforcing strip or band U and extending rward tln'oueli the maior por* tion et the textile material of 'thestocliing and .having heads or enlargements at their forward ends, best shown in .liig These studs ll are for the detacliehle coi'ineotioii t0 the stocking' of the attachin members F of stocking supportin r straps G, "which atta-cli ing members F anc straps G may be of the conventional construction or of any other construction compatihlev with the purpose of inv inifentior it point i desire 'te .rime-leniin the discretion oi the 'manufacturer mynovel stocking may be provided with one stud E or with a plurality of' studs, though Iprefer to employ aplurality of studs since when the same are provided and the stocking is used in combination with a supporter having a single attaching member the said member 11 may be connected to the stocking at any desired point about the limb of the wearer. I would also have it understood that the connection of the stocking to the stocking supporter through the medium of one of the studs E and an attach-- ing member F does not entail engagement of the attaching member F with any ortion of the textile material of the stoc 'ng, and hence there is 'no liability whatever of the textile material being worn,4 torn or other wise deteriorated by the action of the attaching member. From this it follows that my im provements are calculated to materially prolong the usefulness of the stocking as a whole, and this by the provision of means through the medium of which a stocking supporter may be expeditiously and easily connected to a stocking and as readily disconnected from a stocki g.
It is obvious that in lieu of the studs E, the reinforcing stri or band at the top of the stocking may e provided with any other appurtenances or appurtenance for the attachment of the stocking to a supporter, without involving depart-ure from my claimed inventionf In addition to the practical advantages hereinbefore ascribed to the stocking made in accordance lwith my invention, it will be noticed that theI improved stocking is almost as cheap as an ordinary stocking and is quite as iinished in appearance as the same.
The constructions herein shown and described constitute the preferred embodiments of my invention, but it is obvious that in practice such changes or modifications may be made as fairly fall within the scope of mcy invention as defined in the'claims appends Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is: A
1. A stocking having its top portion turne downward and attached to its maj or portion to form a hem, and a strip or band arranged in said hem, and reinforcing strips depending from said strip or band, and also having a device attached to the said strip or band and adapted for the engagement of the attaching member of a stocking supporter.
2. A stocking havingits top portion turned downward and attached to its major portion to form a hem, and a strip or band arranged in said hem; said hein and strip or band eing quilted, and reinforcing strips depending from the strip or band and attached to the major portion et the stocking, and also having a device attached to the said strip or band and adapted for the engagement of the attaching .member of a stocking supporter.
Astocking having it stop portion turned downward and attached to its major portion to form a hem, and a strip or band arranged in said hem; said hem and strip or band eing quilted, and reinforcing strips depending from the strip or band at the inner side ofthe major portion of the stocking; said depending strips and major portion of the stocking being quilted7 and a device attached to the said strip or band and adapted for the enl gagement of the attaching member of a stocking supporter.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
