STATES PATENT OFFICE;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 3, 1907. Serial No. 376,985.
Patented March 24, 1908.
To all whom it may concern: y 5 4 Be it known that I, THOMAS J. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, have invented an 1111 rovement in Combination Furniture, of which the followin is a specification.
My invention re ates to an improvement in combination furniture and articularly to a combined bed and couch or ed and chair, and the object thereof is the provision of a piece of furniture of the class to which this invention relates so constructed that the movable or convertible sections thereof are connectedby suitable means, causing them to move simultaneously, the one being moved by the movement of the other and vice verse, to or from the interchangeable positions of the parts of the piece of furniture in making thereof a bed or couch. I
, In carrying out my invention, I employ a suitable frame comprising end members, members connecting the end members, a suitable back section, a seat section preferably made similar'ly to the back section, means for pivotally mounting the-back section in the mounting the seat section in the frame and means connecting the said back and seat sections to cause. the same to-move simultaneously with one another, as will be hereinafter more particularly set forth.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a erspective view of my improved combined bed and couch, showing t esame broken away centrally to economize space, and Fig. 2 is av transverse section showing the parts in a positliofii, wherein the same are adapted to form a e Referring particularly to the drawin in constructing my im roved combined bed and couch, I-employ a ame preferably comprising similar. end members a and b, which may be of any suitable desi and made of any desired material, and t ese end members a andb are joined by connecting members 0,
which as will be understood, may be of any desired length, depending of course upon Whether the article of furniture is to be employed as a couch and bed or an easy chair an bed, the length of the connecting members being comparativel short in the use of.
the article of furniture or the latter named purpose, whereas for the combined couch and ed the connecting memberswcrarc necesframe, means for 'pivotallysar y of a length corresponding to that of the:
average length bed, and moreover the frame structuremay/ be strengthened by suitable cross straps d extending between and connected with the connecting members 0, so as 0 to form a metal framework.
Together with the hereinbefore described frame structure, I employ a back section e and a seat section both of which are preferably constructed m a similar manner, which suitable double helico-volute springs are secured at their central portions,-these springs bein secured to the attice work by being wire thereto or being connected in any other suitable manner. As is customary,
also employ straps of burlap 12 or other similar material passed over the s rings 11 to secure their free ends in place. oreover each of these back and seat sections efi is advantageously provided with a t s which is suitably upholstered. The sections 30 eleton e f are pivotally mounted in the frames by trunnions. I
The back section e is provided with trunnions g and the seat section f with similar trunnions k and these trunnions g and h are received in suitable bearings provided thereforiin the frame end members a 6. Within the frame end members a I) each trunnion g is provided with a sprocket i and similarly Within the frame end members a b,
each trunnion h is provided with a sprocket 7c and a chain 1 is passed aroundthe pairs of sprockets i and 7: within each frame end member-a I). Only one set of sprockets and a chain are shown, but it is to be understood as that a corres ondingset is located at-theopposite side of the article of furniture. One of the trunnions k may be provided with a square stem extending through the frame end member a and adapted to receive thelever 13.
The seat section f is provided with bracket legs or supports m upon which the same rests when m the position'shown in Fi 2, these legs m resting against the face 0 the back section e when the article is in use as a [05 couch and in which the said back section 6 rests against suitable sto s 14 provided in the frame end members a b or this purpose,
On the inner faces of the frame end members a, b, I prefer to em 10 springs'indicated at n and upon whic t e central art of the seat section f bears when the artic e of l furniture is used as a seat or couch and upon which the central part of the back section (2 bears when the article is to be used as a bed, the function of these springs n being to cause the parts to seat easily, that is without'a jolt or jar in being converted from one position to the other and also to sli htly assist in the initial return movement 0% the back and seat sections, the former of which as Will be understood when the article is ill/1186 as a bed, will be supported by the connectin members 0 and the cross straps (1, whereas w en in use as a couch, the seat section f is supported by the same parts.
sizes of the s rockets ?I and 7c are such that inthe seat section, the other section will be moved therewith; and it will be further understood that in lieu of the sprocket i, I may employ a dummy wheel to which in the desired position, the chain Z or other'suitable forward in the frame, a back section pivoted at its lower end in the said frame,"and devices connected to the said pivotal points and also connected together for simultaneous action, whereby the seat section is turned over and outwardly and back section turned downwardly.
2. In a combined bed and couch and in combination, end members, connecting members extending between and connected to said end members, a back section and a seat section, trunnions secured in the said back section, bearings to receive the same in the in the said seat section, bearings to receive p 1 said frame end members, trunnions secured It will be understood that the relative the same in the said frame end members, I
sprockets secured on the said trunnions within the frame end members and chains runnin over the said sprockets and operating Wit in the said frame end members to cause the shifting of one of the said sections to, effect the simultaneous shiftin of the other section, the relation of the sai sprockets bethrough an an le of 180 effects a movement of the bac section from its upright to its horizontal position-and vice versa.
connecting means is secured by a screw or i Signed by me this 27th day of Ma 1907. otherwise. 1
