CONVIlilRTIBLE BED AND DAVENPORT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Application filed July 21, 1911. Serial No. 689,734.
' To all whom it concern:
Be it known that I, LnwIs B.-Jnrroorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Convertible Bed and Davenport, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact descri tion.
T e object of the invention is to provide a new and improved convertible bed and 'davenport, arranged to permit of convenient extension for, use as a bed, or ready folding for use as a davenport.
For the purpose mentioned, use is made 1 of a main frame, a slidable support adapted to pass between thesides of'the main frame, a bed frame formed of front, rear and middle sections pivotally connected with each other, the rear section. having a link connection with the main frame and with the said slidable support, the middle bed-frame secti on having-a sectional link connection with the said support, and being also pivoted on the support, and the bed-frame section having a link connection with the said sectional link of the middle bed-frame section.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Fi re 1 is a' rspective view of the converti 1e bed an davenport with the parts in extended position to form a bed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same; and Fig. 3 is a like view of the same with the parts in folded position to form a davenport.
The main frame'A of the convertible bed and davenport consists essentially of the sides A rigidly connected with each other by a top crossbar A below which is arranged a back B ivotally connected near its up er end at to thesides A of the main Frame A. The bed frame C is formed of a front section C, a middle section C I and a rear section 6, the sections being pivotally connected with each other, and the bed spring D is secured at its ends to the front end of the front bed-frame section 0' and the rear end of the rear bed-frame section C and the'front end of the front bedframe section C is provided with foldable legs E for supporting the outer end of the section C on the floor when the bed-frame is vided at the front end with casters H and at the rear end with friction rollers H mounted to travel in se ental guideways I held on the sides A o the mam frame A. The middle bed-frame section C is pivoted at H on brackets H arranged on the front end of the slidable support H, and the rear portion of the'said middle section C is connected by sectional links J, J with the said slidable support H. Links K pivotally connect the sides of the front bed-frame section C with the pivot J 2 connecting the sections J, J of the sectional links with each other, the arrangement being such that when l and 2, then the links K hold the sectional links J, J in extended or vertical position, to insure a proper support of the middle bed-frame section C from the slidable support H.
In order to support the bed spring D in termediate its ends, use is made of two rows of sprin s L and N of which the row of springs is mounted on a V-shaped bar L the bed frame is extended, as shown in Figs. v
secured at its sides to the sides of the middle bed-frame section C The row of springs N is supported on a seat 0, connected at one end by a flexible connection P with the front end of the front bed-frame section C, while the other end of the seat 0 is rovided with brackets O pivoted at O to t e bracket H of the slidable support H. Thus when the ,bed frame sections are extended, the bed sprin D is firmly stretched on the bed frame C an is supported between its ends by the two sets or rows of springs L and N. A front board Q is attached at its top edge to a U-shaped link Q pivoted on the pivot H previousl mentioned, and connecting the bracket with the middle bed-frame section 0, and a piece of fabric Q or other flexible material connects the upper end of the board Q with the seat 0, so that when the parts are in folded position to form a davenport, then the board Q and the fab- .ric Q extend downward from the seat 0 between the sides A of the main frame A, to give a finished appearance to the daven port.
The sides A of the main frame A are provided with supporting lugs R for the sides of the front bed-frame section C .to rest on at the time the bed frame is folded and the device forms a davenport, as plainly indicated in Fig. 3, with the seat 0 resting on top, of the front bed-frame section 0'. The rear end of the rear bed-frame section C is provided with rollers S adapted to travel on the rear face of the back B at the time the parts are moved into a folded position, so as to swing the back B forward with a view to move its lower end against the rear end of the seat 0, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3.
When the parts are in an extended position, 'as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, then the support H is partly drawn out from between the sides of the main frame A to properly assist in supporting the extended bed frame, the front end of which is supported by the legs E while the rear-end is supported by the links F and G. Now when.
it is desired to convert the bed into a davenport, the user folds the legs E against the end of the front bed-frame section C and then swings the same rearwardly to cause the links K to open the sectional links J, J 4 with a view to swing theniiddle-bed-frame section C downward, and at the same time an inward pushing movement is given to the section G and the support H to cause the rear bed-frame section C to swing up- 'wardly with the rollers S engaging the rear face of the back B, to swing the same forward as previously explained.
It is understood that when the front bedframe section C is swung over into a folded positionit rests on the lugs R and the seat C and the fabric QP'is stretched by the seat 0 so as to form'with the board Q aneat front for the davenport.
By making the guideways I in segmental shape and having friction rollers H of the support traveling in the said guideways, it is evident that when the parts are moved into a folded position they readily fold without danger of binding as the support H is free to swing up and down .with the casters H as a fulcrum and the friction rollers H as a means for imparting a swinging motion to the support.
It is understood that by the arrangement described a very firm bed is provided when the parts are extended, andthe parts can be readily folded to form a complete davenport of neat appearance.
Having thus described'my invention, I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: Y
