To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH Soss, a citizen of the United States, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Checks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to door checks, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class by means of which a door is normally held in a closed position and which will automatically operate to close the door after it has been open and which will permit the door to swing freely both in opening and closing.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvement are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which;'*
Figure 1 is a sectional view of a part of a door frame, a part of a door and showing my improved door check; Fig. 2 a horizontal section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and, Fig. 3 a view of the side of the check opposite that shown in Fig. 1 and showing the check detiached orremoved from the door frame and oor.
In the drawing forming part of this speci fication, I have shown at a the bottom part of one side of a door frame, at a a part of the sill of the door frame, and at a a part of a door, and in the practice of my invention, I secure in the door sill a a cylinder b which extends longitudinally thereof and beneath the side a of the door frame, and said cylinder is placed in a chamber 0 in. the door sill one end portion of which is in communication with a corresponding chamber 0 in the bottom part of the door frame. The cylinder 1) is provided. with a plate I) by which it is secured in the door sill, and the end thereof which is beneath the side of the door frame, as shown, is open and provided with a longitudinally movable plunger 6 the inner end of which is tubular 1n form, and. said plunger is provided with a piston rod 6 having a piston b movable in the cylinder 6, and the cylinder 1) is divided by a transverse partition I) through which the piston rod 1) passes into two chambers b and b and the piston 12'' is movable in the chamber 6 and said chamber 6 is provided at its opposite ends with air ports (1 and (1 the air port (1 being adjacent to the partition 6, and the chamber 6 is provided with an air port (i also adjacent to said partition, and in the form of construction shown, a spiral spring cl is mounted on the piston rod 6* and bears on the partition I) and on the plunger b and the outer end of the plunger 6 is provided with an arm d which extends up into the chamber 0? in the bottom of the side portion a of the door frame. I also provide a hinge composed of swinging members or arms e and holders f with which the members or arms 6 are connected as shown and as hereinafter described, and the said holders comprise parallel end plates f and back plates f forming boxshaped devices open at all sides except at the back, and in the form of construction shown, the bottom end plate f of one of the holders f is preferably formed integrally with the end of the cylinder 6 or the plate I) which is beneath the side a of the door frame, while the corresponding end plate of the other holder is formed integrally with said holder, or the back late thereof, and secured to the door a as s lOWIl in Fig. 1, and the top end plates f of the holders f are provided with parallel projecting membersf by which said holders are also secured in the door frame and door, said door frame and door being mortised to form chambers in, which the separate parts of the hinge are secured as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
Passing longitudinally through the end members of the holders of the hinge and adjacent to the back plate f 3 thereof and also adjacent to the corresponding faces of said holders are rods g, and the end membersf of the holders are provided in their adjacent faces with slots or grooves in which are mounted rods 9 and the swinging members or arms c are arranged in separate sets or pairs, one set or'pair being pivoted on the rod 9 in one holder and on the rod g in the other holder, and the other set or pair being pivoted on the rod 9 in the last named holder and on the rod in the other holder, and by reason of this arrangement of said swinging members or arms, the separate sets thereof cross each other and at the point where the said swinging members or arms cross a rod 9 is passed therethrough.
The swinging members or arms (2 are curved as shown in Fig. 2, the end ortions thereof being curved inwardly, and t at part of said swinging members or arms between the rod g and the rods 9 is shorter than the end parts thereof between the rod 9 and the rods g and the ends of said members or arms which are connected with the rods are preferably set at an angle to the main parts of said. members or arms, as clearly shown in Fig. 2, and. in the form of construction shown, the grooves 01' slots 9 in the end plates of the holders of the swinging members or arms g are set or inclined at an acute angle to the back platesf of the said holders, the object of this construction and of the particular form of the swinging members or arms 6 being to increase the throw or are of movement of the door a when it is opened, and to permit said door to swing entirely around adjacent to the frame of the door. In Fig. 2 of the drawing, the door is shown at an angle of ninety degrees to the frame to which it is hinged, but it will be understood that the door may be swung through half a circle, if desired, or it may be stopped and held at any desired point or degree of said half of a circle.
The back plates f of the holders f of the hinge are provided, in the form of construction shown, with lugs or projections h which fit between the swinging members or arms 6, as shown in Fig. 3, and as shown in section in full lines in Fig. 2, and the lugs or projections h are provided with semicircular recesses in which the rods 9 fit, the object of this construction being to brace said rods and also limit the movement of the swinging arms or members 6 when the door is opened. The rods 9 are also preferably provided with collars or sleeves 7L2 which separate the separate swinging members or arms a which are mounted thereon and which facilitate the operation of the hinge and the swinging of said members or arms.
Pivoted to the arm which is secured to the end of the plunger 12 is a link i which is also pivoted between two of the swinging members or arms 6 in the holder or hinge which is countersunk or mortised in the door frame and the pivotal connection of said link with the swinging members or arms 6 in the holder f which is secured in the door frame is at the angle formed by the main part of said swinging members or arms and the end portions thereof which are mounted on the corresponding rod 9 The operation of this device will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with following statement thereof.
In the normal position of the parts when the door is closed as shown in Fig. 1, the piston 5 carried by the rod 5 will occupy the central part of the chamber 5 in the cylinder b. If now the door be open and swung into the position shown in Fig. 2, the plunger b Will be forced by the piston b inwardly or in the direction of the arrow in the chamber 6 forced out through the port (1, and air'will pass into said chamber through the port (Z and the air will be forced through the port d by the plunger 12 The ports (Z and d are small and the air will pass out therethrough very slowly and the movement of the door above described will compress the air in that part of the chamber 11 opposite the partition 6 and in the chamber b and when the door is released the air pressure in said chambers and the spring d will force the plunger 5 back into the position shown in Fig. 1, and this movement will be gradual and the door a will be gradually closed. In this last operation the air is gradually forced out of that part of the chamber b adjacent to the partition I) and this regulates the movement of the plunger 6 and causes the same to be slow and regular. It will also be understood that when the door is open as shown in Fig. 1, the plunger If is forced inwardly against the operation of the spring (1*, and this spring also serves to close the door, or aids in said closing, by forcing the plunger b back into the position shown in Fig. 1, as above stated. The spring (1* may be made to serve alone for the purpose of closing the door as above described, but I prefer to use the chambers I) and b and provide the chamber b with the ports (Z and d and the chamber b with the port (1 to permit of the slow and gradual passage of air into and out of said chambers and thus cushion the piston b and also the plunger b and make the operation more regular and positive than otherwise would be possible.
It will, of course, be necessary to provide the door with other hinges and said hinges will be of the same construction as that shown in the drawing with the exception that the bottom end platesf of the holders of the swinging members or arms 6 will be formed in the same manner as the top plates f and the bottom plates will be provided with projecting members f the same as the top plates f of said holders, and in this way, the other hinges may be countersunk in and secured in the frame and door and will operate in the same manner as the hinge shown in the drawing, and hinges made in this manner are shown and described in an application for Letters Patent of the United States executed and filed by me of equal date herewith, or other hinges similar to those described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 825,943 granted to me on the 17th day of July 1906 may be employed.
My invention is not limited to the exact form of the swinging members or arms e here in shown and described, and said swinging members or arms may be segmental in shape or curved in different ways, and the osition of the grooves or slots 9 in the end p ates or parts of the holders of said swinging memand the air in said chamber will be gradually l bers or arms may be placed at different angles to the back plates f of said holders, or may be placed parallel therewith, and said grooves or slots may be curved in form, if desired, the shape of said grooves or slots, the position thereof, and the shape of the members or arms 6 serving to control the swinging of the door and the extent thereof and the radius of said movement.
Although, I have shown and described the bottom plate or member f of the holder f which is secured in the door frame a as formed integrally with the plate 6 or the cylinder b, it will be apparent that said bottom plate or memberf may be formed integrally with the corresponding back platef of said holder and may be secured in the door frame in the same manner as the bottom plate or member f 2 of the holder which is secured in the door (1 but by forming the bottom plate or memberf of the holder that is secured in the frame a integrally with the plate Z2 or cyl inder b greater strength is secured and there is less danger of wrenching or twisting the separate parts of the hinge in the operation of the door check.
It will be observed that my improved door check comprises as a part of its construction one of the hinges of the door, and it will also be observed that the hinge employed is what is known as an invisible hinge, the parts thereof being invisible when the door -is closed, and the other hinges willv also be of the invisible type or of the class shown in my prior patent hereinbefore referred to, and also described and claimed in the application for Letters Patent of the United States eXe outed and filed of equal date herewith and hereinbefore referred to.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a door check, comprising in its construction a cylinder placed in the door sill and extending beneath one side of the door frame, a plunger movable in the end of said cylinder beneath said side of the door frame, the opposite end portion being divided by a partition into different chambers having air inlet and out let ports, a piston rod connected with said plunger and passing, through said partition and provided with a piston movable in the chamber opposite said plunger, and a spring placed between said plun er and said partiti on of a hinge composed of separate parts secured in said side of the door frame and in the door, and means for connecting said hinge with said plunger so as to operate the latter.
2. A door check comprising in its construction a cylinder adapted to be seated in a door sill and to have one end thereof extend beneath one side of the door frame, a transverse partition in the opposite end of said cylinder to divide the same into separate compartments each provided with an air inlet and outlet port, a plunger movable in one compartment of the cylinder, a rod connected with said plunger and passing through said partition, a piston secured to said rod and movable in the other compartment of said cylinder, and a spring mounted on said rod between said plunger and partition.
3. In combination with a door check, comprising in its construction a cylinder adapted to be seated in a door sill and to have one end thereof extended beneath one side of the door frame, a transverse partition in the opposite end of said cylinder to divide the same into separate compartments each provided with an air inlet and outlet port, a plunger movable in one compart ment of the cylinder, a rod connected with said plunger and passing through said partition, a piston secured to said rod and movable in the other compartment of said cylinder, and a spring mounted on said rod between said plunger and partition a hinge composed of similar holders adapted to be respectively secured in the door frame and door over the end of the cylinder in which the plunger is mounted, one or more sets of curved swinging arms pivotally and slidably secured in said holders, and means for operatively connecting said arms with said plunger whereby the latter may be operated in said cylinder.
