-tion of our invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to use the same.
Our invention relates to improvements in door-checking hinges, and has particular relation to devices of this character in which the door is checked when swinging to its normal position after being opened, as disclosed in an application filed by us on September 24, 1895, Serial No.' 563,488, of which this present application is a division.
The object of our invention is to provide a door-hinge with a checking device which in performing its functions will provide an equalized pressure on the barrel. or pintle of the hinge and in which means are providedv for regulating the rapidity with which the door closes, any suitable door-closing mechanism being used to force the door shut.
Our invention consists in the improved construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the accompanying claims.
In the drawings, in which corresponding parts are indicated by corresponding numerals and letters of reference, Figure l is a perspective view of a hinge containing our improvements. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view showing our check-regulating mechanism.'
Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken through one of the knuckles. Fig. 4 is a crosssectional view taken on line 2 2 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view showing a modified construction of the packing.
In the presentapplication, which is a division of our application for door-checks filed September 24, 1895,-Serial No. 563,488, 1 designates a double Vswinging hinge having the usual leaves 2 2 and knuckles 3 3, the leaves being adapted to beattached to the casing and door and the leaves and knuckles connected together in the usual manner.

held together by means of a tubular barrel or pintle 4, which barrel or pintle constitutes the cylinder or cylindrical chamber 5,in which yis placed the iuid used in the checking operation of our device. p
It is obvious that we may use the checking device now to bedescribed in both knuckles of the hinge or in but one of them, in which latter case the door will be checked in closing in one direction only. Such being the case and it being readily seen that the checking device is the same whether used in but one knuckle or inmore than one, we will describe only the construction of one of the knuckles and its contents, reserving to ourselves the right to use the same in but one knuckle or in a plurality of knuckles, as may be found necessary.
lVithin and extending lengthwise of the tubular pintle 4 is secured by suitable means the iixed head or partition G, of suitable coniiguration, provided with openings 7n and a spring-valve 771 to close the same against the passage of the liquid in one direction, said valve being secured to the partition by any suitable means-as, for instance, a screw 7. The partition 6 may be secured to the barrel or pintle 4 by any suitable means-as, for instance, by screwsbut it is preferably secured in the present device by being formed integral with the upper tip of the knuckle, which tip is adapted to be secured to the barrel or pintle 4 by means of screw-threads, making an imperforate head for the chamber 5.
An oscillating piston 8 is arranged within the barrel or pintle 4 and extends lengthwise thereof. The inner face of this piston may be rounded, forming the axial rod 8, which tits in a suitable recess formed in the inner surface or edge of the partition 6. The upper end of this axial rod forms a pivot t', which fits loosely in a recess formed in the upper tip of the knuckle. The loWerend of the piston is provided with a circular head 8G, adapted to tightly fit the lower endofthe barrel or pintle 4. This head 8c may be pro-v vided with any suitable packings-p-such', for instance, as shown inpFigs. 3 and -the particular construction thereof not forming an important part of the present invention, it

being only necessary that such packing will v permit the piston to freely oscillate on its for the chamber 5, it being necessary, of course, that the packing will permit the piston to be removed when desired.
The reduced end Si of the piston extends downward beyond the circular head through the packing and' into the lower tip of the knuckle of the movable member of the hinge, where it is held against independent motion by a pin 8d, passing through the tip and the reduced lower end Sb.
The piston may be semicylindrical, segmental, or other suitable shape, as desired, it being only necessary that the same be of sufficient strength to force the liquid in either direction upon the movement of the piston. The piston lits loosely within the barrel or pintle 4, so that its outer face or periphery does not infringe or bear in its movement against the inner surface of the barrel or pintle. In other words, there is a restricted space 9 extending the entire length of the piston between the inner wall of the pintle or barrel and the outer surface of the piston, the object of which will be hereinafter disclosed.
6"L designates lugs attached to the upper tip of the hinge, and 8c designates lugs attached to the lower tip, the lugs forming the means for actuating the various parts of the check mechanism through the medium of the leaves.
The parts being assembled, the chamber 5 being partially filled with the fluid, and the hinge attached to a door having any suitable door-closer attached and the door closed, the operation of the device during the opening and closing of the door will be as follows: In opening the door from a closed position the piston 8 through its connections with the door will be forced in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 4, thereby forcing the Huid contained in the one side of the chamber 5 through the openings '71L and the restricted space 9 into the opposite side of the chamber. The door being opened, the door-closer is brought into action to close the same, and thereby change the direction of the movement of the piston, whereby the fluid will be forced in the opposite direction by the piston pressing on the confined fluid back through the restricted space 9 to the side of the chamber from which it was passed in opening the door, thus forming a check in which the pressure of the fluid against the barrel or pintle will be exerted along its entire length, thus equalizing the pressure and preventing any undue strain on any particular portion of the hinge--a fault found in hinges heretofore made and used for this purpose.
In addition to the above construction the invention provides a means for increasing the rapidity of the closing of the door and means for regulating such increase. This is accomplished by means of the following auxiliary device:
The upper tip of the knuckle is provided with an opening a, which extends downward a suitable distance into the upper end of the partition 6, a portion of said opening being screw-threaded. A series of openings a", extending at right angles to and intersecting said opening a, are formed in said radial partition, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. A suitable pin or screw b is screwed into the opening a a sufficient distance to close as many of the openings as may be desired to regulate the speed of closing movement of the door, the speed being regulated by the number of openings a remaining unclosed. By means of this construction the liquid when the door is being opened will be forced or passed through the valved openings 7, the restricted space 9, and the openings a. Vhen the door is being closed, the fluid will be forced by the action of the piston 8 through the restricted space 9 and the openings or ports a, thus enabling the fluid to pass from one side of the radial partition to the other in a less or greater amount in a certain length of time, the amount being regulated by the number of openings u'sremaining open, and thus allowing the door to be closed in a regulated time and speed.
While we have herein stated that the radial partition is fixed and the piston movable on its pivot, yet it is to be understood that We do not limit ourselves to such construction, but claim the right to use these elements in a vice-versa relation-Alim, the radial partition movable and the piston fixed with relation to the connections between the door and the respective parts of the hinge.
We also claim the right to place the packing mechanism that may be used in the hinge at the top instead of the bottom, as shown, the use in either position being equally desirable.
Although we have herein shown and described the invention made by us and shown a way in which it could be carried into effect, we do not limit ourselves to the specific constructions shown and their operations, but claim herein the use of equivalents commensurate with what is claimed to be our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new isl. In a hinge the combination of the leaves with a fluid chamber, pressure equalizing check mechanism contained in said chamber and means for regulating the rapidity of movement of the door in closing substantially as described.
2. In a combined hinge and door-check, the combination with the leaves and their knuckle of a cylinder or barrel adapted to contain a liquid, located within said knuckle, pressure-equalizing check mechanism contained in said cylinder or barrel and means for regulating the rapidity of movement of the door in closing as set forth.

leaves of a tubular pintle for connecting said leaves, said tubular pintle adapted to contain a fluid, pressure-equalizing check mechanism contained in said pintle and means for regulating the rapidity of movement of the door in closing as set forth.
4. The combination of the hinge-leaves of a cylinder or barrel adapted to contain a uid within the knuckle thereof, a valved partition in said cylinder to permit the passage of the fluid in one direction only during the movement of the hinge, a piston loosely fitted within the cylinder wherebya space is formed between the cylinder and piston, and additional means for the passage of fluid from one side of the partition to the other during the closing operation of the door as set forth.
5. In a door check and hinge the combination of the leaves of a cylinder or barrel within the knuckle thereof of a partition provided with an opening parallel with the longitudinal axis of said partition, an opening formed at an angle to and intersecting said first-mentioned opening and means for regnlating the size of said intersecting opening, a piston loosely tted within the cylinder whereby a space is formed between the inner surface of the cylinder and the outer surface of the piston as specified.
6. The combination of the hinge-leaves, of
a tubular pintle forming a fluid-chamber a partition in said pintle extending lengthwise thereof, said partition provided with an opening therein intersected by one or more openings and adjustable means for closing said one or more openings with a piston loosely iittiug said tubular' pintle as set forth.
7. In a hinge, the combination of the leaves a tubular pintle adapted to contain a liuid with a partition provided with valved ports or passages for permitting the passage of the fluid in one direction only and ports or openings for the passage of the iuid in both directions and an adjustable pin or screw for closing one or more of said last-mentioned ports or openings as described.
8. In a combined hinge and door-check the combination with the leaves, a fluid chamber or barrel Within the knuckle thereof suitable packing therefor, pressure-regulating mechanism contained in said chamber or barrel of speed regulating mechanism contained in said barrel cooperating with said pressureequalizing check mechanism as set forth.
