mPROvEMENT IN ROLLER-CLEANER IN SPIINNING-MACHINES.

The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.

To all whom it may concern:

have invented a new and useful Improvementin Spinning-Machines; and I d o hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a section'of a spinningame, with my improved cleaner shown in position upon the upper, or pressing-roller.

Figure 2 is a top view of the same, showing the construction of my improved upper roller, and the manner of applying the same to a'spinning-jack, or frame.

Figure 3 is a sectional elevation, 011 line :v-a: of iig. 2, showing the construction and manner of applying the cleaner to the lower roller.

Figure 4 is an end view of the frame, showing the manner of gearing the rollers together.

Figure 5 is a sectional elevation, on line, y-y of iig. 2, of the travelling cleaner for the upper roller.

Corresponding letters in all the gures designate corresponding parts.

It is well known to manufacturers of cotton and vgoolleu goods, that in spinning the yarns for such fabrics, great difficulty is experienced in keeping the rollers, through or between which the yarn passes while being spun, free 'om gum and dirt, which, when they are allowed to accumulate thereon to any considrable extent, cause the yarn to leave the rollelsin an uneven and inferior condition, if it is not broken and rendered valueless by the operation.

To remedy this evil, is the object of my present invention, which may be dened as consisting, first, of a travelling cleaner for the upper roller, to which lateral motion is imparted by means ofa conical roller connccted therewith; and, secondly, in acleaner, which is caused to act upon the lower roller, both as a cleaner of such roller, and a brake, for steadying the motion of such rollers, thuspreventing the backlash of the gearing, and producing an improved product.

A, in the drawings, represents the frame-Work of the machine, 'which may be made of wood, iron, or any other suitable material, but which, as it forms no part of my present invention, need not be particularly described here.

Brepresents a cross-beam, which may extend across the machine, in the direction of the length of the rollers, or it may only extend from one section toanothe'r of such machine, but it is to be so arranged, that the combined scraper and brake, hereafter to be described, may be attached toit.

'C O C represent a series of rollers, such as are common in devices of this kind, they being arranged inthe usual way, and for a purpose which is common to spinning-jacks, or frames.

D represents a travelling roller, in the form of a truncated cone, which is arranged to lie in the cavity formed by the upper and one of the lower rollers.

This travelling roller is to have a frame of metal attached to it, by having projections, or pivots formed thereon, and entering cavities formed in the ends of such roller; or it may be by a shaft running through the same, and having journals upon its outer ends, .for the reception of the frame. a

To the end-bars of this frame is to be attached a plate of metal, of suiicient width to allow it toA be formed into the` segment of a circle, which segment shall cover a space, upon the periphery of the roller, equal to about one-fourth (more or less) of its circumference, the length of the same being about equal to that of the roller to which it is attached.

This curved plate is shown at E,.in the drawings,

and it is to be lined, upon its inner face, with cloth,I or some other elastic material, which will tend to keep the surface of the roller, upon which it rests, clean, and also serve as a means of lubricating the same, should such an operation be found necessary.

To the outer, or lower edge of this plate, a scraper, a, is attached, in any suitable manner, anni so arranged, that as the surface of the 'roller O turns towards this scraper, any gum from the material which is being spun, or any dirt, from any other source, which may accumulate upon such roller, will be cleaned oiby it, and thus be prevented from injuring the yarn.

F F Frepresent a series of gear-wheels, through which motion is communicated to the rollers O, in the usual manner.

G represents a combined scraper, or cleaner and brake, which is to be attached to the cross-bar B of the frame, by means of springs'G, asshown iu'ig. 2.

This combined cleaner and brake consists of a bar of wood, or other suitable material, which extends from one spring G' to the other, to which it is to be secured.

Upon the under edge of this bar there lis to vbe attached a plate of metal, which is to extend, beyond such bar, in the direction-'of roller C, with the under side of which it comes in contact, and thus performs its function of scraper, or cleaner for such roller.

It will be apparent, that by means of the curvature given to the springs G', and the arrangement of screws, which secure them to the frame of the machine, any desired amount of friction may be caused between the cleaner G and rollerG, and that such friction will have Ta tendency to steady the movements of the series of gear-wheels, and, consequently, of the rollers which they propel, the result of which will be an improved product.

Having thus described my invention,

That I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y l. The travelling cleaner D E, constructed as shown and described.

2. The travelling cleaner D E, iu combination with the feed-rollers of a. spinning-jack, or frame, substantially as shown and described.

3. The arrangement of the cleaner G, spring G', :und roller C, substantially as and for the purpose shown and described.
