AMOS E. WHIPPLE, OF WI-IITINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO WHI'IIN MACHINE VV'ORKS, OF WHITINSVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPOBATION OF MASSACHUSETTS,
SPINDLE-DBIVING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent. 'Patented Mar. 12, 1918.
Application filed June 1, 1916. Serial No. 101,196.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Amos E. WVi-IIPPLE, a resident of lVhitinsville, in the county of lVorcester and Commonwealth of Massachu setts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Spindle-Driving Mechanisms, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in spindle driving mechanisms in which the spindles are driven from a rotating cylinder by means of endless bands or tapes having frictional contact with the peripheral surfaces of the cylinder and spindle whirls, a group of two or four spindles usually being driven by each tape. 6
The object of my invention is to provide an improved construction of the tension pulley hanger whereby chafing of the driving tapes against the hanger is avoided and also the hanger is so designed that it may be removed without cutting the tape.
Another and important'object is to provide simple means for preventing damage to a tape due to its slipping from its pulley and becoming entangled with adjacent tapes, or winding about the cylinder.
The novel features of my invention will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the following claim.
Referring to the drawings:
Figure 1 is a transverse sectional elevation of such parts of a spinning or twisting frame as are necessary to show the application of my invention.
- Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same showing a group of spindles, their driving tape and its slack take-up. r I
Fig. 3 is a front elevation of binder pulley hanger showing a preferred form of the tape retainer.
Fig. 4c is a side view of same.
In the accompanying'drawings, the spindle rails 1, the spindles 2, their whirls-3, the driving tape 4, the tension pulley 5, and the tape driving cylinder 6 are all of the usual type in common use in spinning and twisting frames. In the usual type of frame the binder or tension pulley 5 is journaled in times in the tape.
bearings fitted in the arms of an inverted U shaped'hanger. With this construction the tape is subjected to excessive wear due to chafing againstthe arms of the hanger:
Another objectionable feature is thenecessity of cutting the tape whenever it is de: sired to. remove the hanger. my improved hanger these objectionable features are eliminated. 1
In my improved constjuction the binder pulley 5 is journaled in bearings 7 fitted in the hook-shaped hanger 8 which is removably connected to the weight arm 9 swinging on rod 10 so that the leverage exerted by the weighted arm takes up the slack in the tape thus maintaining an even tension at all By the use of To facilitate the removal of a hanger without cutting the tape the hanger is so designed that the binder pulley is held in two bearings, one in the main leg of the hanger, and the other in an arm of a hook-shaped extension 11 of the main leg in angular relation thereto. The angularity of the extension is so designed that the bottom of the hook is located between the receiving and delivery paths of the tape as it passes about the binder pulley and the hanger is easily removed.
In case a tape should accldentally run oft its pulley a guard 16,'Figs. 3 and 4, prevents it from becoming entangled with adj acent tapes and the resulting damage thereof.
"This guard consists of an upwardly extending finger located on the hooked extension of the hanger and so situated that the tape on slipping from its pulley is caught ina pocket formed by the side of the pulley, top of the pulley bearing and the guard.
I claim:
In a spindle driving mechanism, the comof spindles, a tape for transmitting motion bination of a driving cylinder, a plurality from cylinder to spindles, a tape binder pulley, a hooked-shaped hanger for the same, and'a tape guard consisting of an upwardly extending finger located on the hooked extension of the hanger andsubstantially parallel with the main leg of hanger.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification.
. AMOS E. WHIPPLE.
