To all whom t may concern:

Be it known that I, HIRAM PINKNEY LIT- TLE, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Forest Home, in the county of Butler and State of Alabama, have'invented new and useful Improvements in Back-Band Hooks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention is an improved back band lhook for use on plow harness to support the traces and lines or reins, the object of the invention being to provide a cheap, simple compact, strong and durable structure which will enable the lines to be retained in place and prevent the lines from becoming tangled or etting under the horses feet and which wi l enable the traces to be readily engaged and disengaged, as hereinafter described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a front elevation of a back band hook constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same taken on the plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.l

The frame 1 of my improved back band hook may be of any suitable form and is here shown as rectangular in f orm and having its sides converging downwardly at the lower end thereof to form a downwardly narrowing extension or arm 2, which is provided with a hook bill 3 that extends upwardly and outwardly from such arm or eX- tension 2. The said frame comprises in addition .to its sides 4 and upper and lower cross bars 5, .6, intermediatecross bars 7, 8, 9, 10,' which are appropriately spaced apart. The said cross bars 7,10 areI rovided on their lower sides with downward y extending tapering studs 11. Near the corners of the said frame 1 are openings 12 for the reception of rivets by means of which the hook when in use is secured to a back band. On the front side of the said frame at the center and upper portion thereof is an outstanding bar or web 13, which is provided at its outer side with aprojection 14 in which is an opening 15 for the reception of the rein or line which serves to support such rein or line and prevent the same from dropping and becoming entangled. The said bar 13 connects and strengthens the bars 5, 7 8 and 9 of the frame and is provided in its lower OrtiOIl with a bore for the reception of a olt 16 which coacts with the bill 3 to detachabl secure a trace, chain or the like, as wi l be readily understood. l

In Fig. 2 a back band is indicated in dotted lines at a passed through the spaces between the bars 5, 7, 8 and through the spaces between the bars 9, 10 and 6 and engaged by the studs 11 to prevent the hook frame from slipping on the said band.

In practice the frame of the hook, includ* ing the web or bar 13 and the bill 3, is preferably a single casting, but may be otherwise constructed.

The herein described back band hook comprising a frame having a plurality of spaced cross bars, a bill at the lower end of said frame, a bar or web at the upper portion of such frame connecting certain of such cross bars, disposed in line with such bill and having an outwardly extending projection provided with an eye for the reception of a rein or line, certain of such cross bars having downwardly extending pointed. studs to engage a back band passed through the spaces between the cross bars, and a bolt mounted in the said web or bar and coacting with the bill to detachably secure a trace.
