JACOB L. HEAD, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.

Specification of Letters malt.
Application filed August 29,1907. Serial No. 390,608.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAcoB L. READ, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Book-Cover, of whichthe following is a specification.
My invention consists of a cover for a book, more particularly of the order known as a loose-leaf, whereby the back and back-bone of the same is sheathed and so protected, and thebook is prevented from scratching a desk, table, etc., on which the same is supported, said cover being adapted to be made to conform to the change in the thickness of the books due to the number of leaves or sheets added or removed, without affecting the operation of openingand closing the book.
Figure 1 represents a plan view of a cover, shown as applied to a book in open condition. Fig. 2 represents a section on line a;w, Fig. 1, on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 represents a plan view, partly broken away, of the cover in opened condition as removed from the book.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :A designates a book of the order of a loose-leaf, the same being well known.
B, B, designate the backs of the book, and C designates the back-bone thereof;
D designates a cover or sheath for the book, the same being formed of canvas or other suitable material comprising pockets E, F, which are adapted to receive freely the backs B, B, and adjustably inclose the same, and the piece G, which connects said pockets and envelops the back-bone C. 1
In the present case, only one of the pockets is shown as adjustable to different thicknesses of the book, as illustrated on the left hand side of Fig. 3, where the cover consists of the exterior piece H, the interior piece J continuous thereof and the tuck or flap K continuous of the outer terminal of the exterior piece H, and which is inserted between the interior piece J and the inner side ofthe back.
A strap L is connected at one end with the flap K, and is doubled on itself forming the loop M, which is passed through and around the plate N, which is secured to the interior piece J, said plate having a slot or opening P therein for evident purpose, the other end of said strap being connected with the slide Q, which is freely fitted on the adjacent portion of the strap, whereby by moving said slide, the loop M maybe lengthened or shortened, whereby the length of the strap may be increased or decreased, by which provision the flap K may be let out or taken in, and thus adjusted as leaves are added to and removed from the book and the thickness of the latter increases or decreases, and so the cover adjusts itself to said thickness, so as to remain properly taut on the book without in any manner interfering with the proper opening or closing of the book, it being evident that the book is well sheathed and protected and is not liable to scratch or otherwise mar the desk, table, etc. on which it may rest.
While I have specified certain means for carrying out my improvements, I do not wish to be limited exactly to the same, but desire to make such changes as may come within the scope of the novelty involved.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 2-- 1. A book cover having a pocket adapted to receive a back of a book, the same being composed of exterior and interior members and a flap which is continuous with one of said members, said flap being constructed to be adjusted relatively to different thicknesses of a book, and ,means for positively holding the same in such adjusted position.
2. A book cover having a pocket adapted to receive a back of a book, the same being composed of exterior and interior members, a flap continuous with one of said members, and a strap connected with said flap and one of said members, said stra being adjustable in length for adjusting sai flap relatively to the thickness of a book.
3. A book cover having a pocketadapted to receive the back of a book, the same being composed of longitudinally extensible exterior and interior members, a flap continuous with the exterior member adapted to enter the interior member, and means for connecting said flap with said interior memher.
4. A bookoover adapted to receive the Patented March 10, 1908.
back of a book consisting of a pocket, and a strap connected with said. flap and :1. fixed means for adjusting and positively holding part, said strap being adjustable in length. said pocket relatively to the thickness of a JACOB L RFAD book. 5 5. In a book cover, a pocket adapted to Witnesses:
