IMPROVEMENT IN LAMP FOR DESTROYIN G INSECTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making .part of the lama.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE O. ORANsToN, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph, and State of Indiana, have invented certain newand useful Improvements in Lamps for Destroying Insects that assail fruit-trees; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference heilig had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which forni a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section.
My' invention relates to a novel device for destroying insects, more especially for such as infest trees; and,
to this end,
It consists in the employment of a lamp, when constructed and arranged in the manner hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawing,
AA represents a circular tin vessel, the sides'of which may be one or more inches in height. l
B is a receptacle for the oil, or such other material This receptacle is furnished with wick-tube O, which may be divided in several wick-chambers, for the purpose of dilnsing as much light as possible when my de'- vice is in actual use.
b b represent two pieces of metal, bent at right angles, and secured to the bottom of vessel A, at or near its centre, so as to form a recess, or groove, as shown in the drawing.
The lower portion, or foot of lamp, or receptacle B,
is provided with projecting sides, or fianges, and so arranged as to slide in grooves just mentioned.'
The vessel A is supplied with a suitable bail, D, by which it is suspended in the branch of a tree.
The manner of using my device is as follows:
The lamp B is supplied with oil or other suitable material, and the tube C with the necessary wick. A
The vessel A is now supplied with water, which may he made attractive by placing therein a condiment.
The lamp is now lighted, and, by means of bail D, the vessel is suspended in a tree.
The insects, being attracted by the light, will flutter around, or attempt to reach it by crawling. In either event, the'y fall into the water and are drowned.
I am aware that my device bears some analogy t0 lamps in ordinary use, but it will be readily observed that the construction and general arrangement of it are' such `as to make it applicable, not only to ordinary home-purposes, but also to that for' which I particularly design it, that of destroying insects.
, Having thus described myinvention,
What I claim, and desire tosecuraby Letters Patent, is- X The vessel A, constructed with deep sides, and provided with grooves b b, in Mcombination with the adjustable lamp B and bail D, all arranged as and for the purpose described.
In testimony. that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE O. CRANSTON. [L. s.] Witnesses:
E. H. LotrHRoP, J. B. RUMsnY.
