Description

.WSSES %ifw@ c. B. DUDLEY.
.Insect Destroyers.
Patented Dec. 24, 1872..
'Lmvrswtoa UNITE STATES PATENT O FICE.
CHARLES R. DUDLEY, OF CANTON, MISSISSIPPI.
IMPROVEMENT EN INSECT-DESTROVERS.
To all .whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, O. R. DUDLEY, of Canton, in the county of Madison and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful'Improvements in Moth-Exterminators and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, that will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanyin gdraw- .ing and to the letters of reference marked there on which form a part of this specification.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a sectional view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is perspective view of same.
A is a conical chamber; B, a partition-wall that supports the reflector O behind the lamp E is a vat surroundingthe lamp D. F is a wind-feather that shifts the whole structure as a weather-vane, so that the lamp D will always be shielded from the wind. In turning it moves on a pivot, G, at the top of a pole, H, the pole passing into the socket I, which fits it loosely. z is metal, glass, or other substance, which prevents the weight of the machine from causing the point G to pierce the bottom of chamber A in using it.
It is well known that the moth deposits eggs, which afterward become the boll and army worm, and the object of my invention is to destroy all kinds of moth.
The lamp D, for coal-oil or other burningfluid, is provided with a wick-tube so as to throw a bright flame in front of the reflector (J. This attracts the moths, which are destroyed by falling into the vat E of sweetened vinegar, tincture of Valerian, and tincture of myrrh, or other attractive substance. This structure is mounted on a pole sufficiently high to reach above to tops of the cotton-plants, and is so sensitively poised on a pivot, G, as to turn with the slightest pressure of the wind against the wind-feather F. The wind-shield J stops the current about the light, 'so that it will burn always with a bright flame. I
The lamp and the reflector are both removable for the purpose of filling with oil or of cleaning.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of appliances for exterminating moths, &o., consisting of reflector, lamp, and fluid-vat, contained in a conical head governedbyaweather-vane,thewholebeingpoised upon a pivot so as to move easily with the wind,
all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as set forth and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 21st day of September, 1872.
C. R. DUDLEY.
