PATENTEDMALR. 10. 1906.
w. M. JOST. LOCKING DEVICE PORBXTENSION TABLES;
APPLICATION FILED SEPT. 23, 1905.
l ll WILLIAM M. JOST, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
LOCKING- DEVICE FOR EXTENSION-TABLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 10, 1908.
Application filed September 23, 1905. Serial No. 279,846.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. JosT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinols, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Locking Devices for Extension-Tables, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to tables and especially to a form of table made of separable parts, so that it can be elongated to increase its size.
The principal object of my invention is to provide a simple, ractical, effective and inexpensive form of ocking device, for locking the two parts of the table together.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of a table embodying my present invention. Fig. 2 is a cross-section taken on line 22 in Fig. 1. Figs. 3 and 4 are views of details of construction.
Referring to Fig. 1, I have-shown the table having legs 1, 1, and center column 2 and a top 3. The center column 2 and the top 3 are split or divided so that one part of the table can be separated from another. The top 3 is conveniently provided with draw bars 4, 4, by which the separable parts of the top can be guided in their separation from one another in the usual way. The top is provided with a central leg 5, which extends down through column 2, being secured to one set of draw bars 4, 4, by a cross-bar 6. top 3 is supported by brackets 7, 7, which are secured to the column 2, but which will not be described in detail in this application, as this construction is made the subject matter of a separate application, executed of even date herewith Serial No. 279,845. The separable parts of the column 2 are locked together by a locking device, consisting of an annular castin 8, adapted to fit inside of the column 2, and aving 1ts ends provided with short hooks 9, 9. This annular member 8 is pivotally connected with one portion of the column 2, by pivots 10, 10. A link or rod 11 is pivotally connected with the annular lever or looking member 8, at 12, said member being provided with spaced upwardly projecting cars a a for this purpose. The rod 11 extends up in the column 2 and is piv- The otally connected with the bell crank 13, which is pivotally supported at 14 upon the top of the column2 to rock in avertical plane.
The rod 11 which is straight for the greater portion of its length is preferably curved at its upper end where it connects with the bell crank. The other side of the bell-crank 13, is pivotally connected with a link 15, which is 1n turn pivotally connected with a lever 16 pivotally supported at 17 to a bracket 18 secured to the under side of the table top. The strip of metal forming the link 15 is bent or twisted to provide an outer flat portion lying in the same horizontal plane as the lever 16, said portion extending beyond the pivot 17 and being curved toward said pivot where it.
makes connection with the lever 16. The other side of the column 2 is provided with pins 19, 19, with which the hooks 9, 9 are adapted to engage. Thus the operation of the device is, that to lock the table the lever 16 is drawn to one side so that the link 15 draws upon the bell crank 13, and thereby elevates the rod 11, and causes the annular part of the member 8 to rise and the hooks 9, 9 to descend, and thereby engage the pins 19, 19. To unlock the table the lever 16 is swung in the opposite direction, withthe result that the hooks 9, 9 are elevated and thereby disengaged from said pins.
' It will be seen that this form of locking device is simple, practical and inexpensive and embodies a minimum number of parts which can be cheaply constructed and easily assembled.
What I claim as my invention is:
In a table of the class described, the combination with the separable portions of the supporting column, of a locking device comprising a curved member pivotally connected with one part of said column and having its ends provided with hooks or catches, said curved member being also provided intermediate its ends with upwardly rojecting ears, a rod pivotally connected with the locking member between the ears thereof, a bell crank pivotally connected with said rod, and pivoted at the top of said column to rock in a vertical plane, said rod bein straight for the greater portion of its length ut curved at its u per end for connection with the bell crank, abracket secured to the table top, alever pivotally supported by the bracket in a horizontal position, a link pivotally connected With 1 my name this 21st day of September A. 1)., the bell crank and having its outer portion l 1905. bent to lie in the same horizontal plane as the l lever, said link being curved at its outer end 5 toward the pivot of the lever and pivotally Witnesses:
connected to said lever. m A. MILLER BELFIELD,
In Witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe I. C. LEE.
