Description

yTo all whom it may comm:
time vaient @tina CARLOS PAGE, OF CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 88,068, dated .Ma/rch 23, 1869.
IMPROVED MONEY-DRAWER.
The Schedule referred to in thou Letters Patent and making pin of the same.
Be it known that I, CARLOS L. PAGE, of `Oambridge, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Money Drawers; and I do hereby declare that. the following is a full'and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in providing a money-drawer `with a sliding top, or cover, so arranged that when the drawer is drawn out, the top, or cover comes with it, so its contents are inaccessible; and also so arranged that any person who is behind the counter, and understands the construction of my arrangement, may, by moving a lever, cause the coverl to remain stationary when the drawer is drawn out, thus render-- ing the contents accessible.
To enable othersskilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use.
In the drawings- Figure lis a perspective view of my drawer asit would appear in a counter. l
Figure 2 is a vertical section through the same.
I construct my money-drawer as follows:
D, the drawer proper, is made in the usual manner, of any desired form and size, and' is provided with a top, or cover, E, as shown in fi 2, said cover sliding in grooves, made in the inside o the side-pieces of the drawer.
F O, fig. 2, is a plug, passing up through the bottom of the drawer, and the bracket N, which is attached to the rear end of the drawer D. p
This plug is held upby the spring S, so that its upper end passes 'through the orifice e, in the cover E of the drawer, so that when the drawer D is drawn out, the cover E must come with it, unless the plug O is lowered so as not to penetrate E.
The plug F O has a notch, near its lower end, into which the end of the lever H projects when the drawer is in, so that any movement of the lever H will cause a corresponding movement of the plug F O.
F O'is a second plug, attached to the frame of the counter, being operated by the lever H.
The upper end of the plug F' O ts into an orice, e', made in E.
The levers F O and F', O', being attachedvto the op posite ends of the same lever H, they are both operated at the same time; that is, if one is raised, the other is lowered, and vice versc.
L is a foot-lever, which, acting through K, operates the lever` H, consequently, the two plugs F O and F' O.-
If the plug F' 0 is raised, so as to enter the orifice in the cover E, it will hold it stationary, so that if the drawer be pulled out, its contents will be exposed, but if the plug F O be left raised up, as shown in the drawings, the cover E will remain over the drawer, and thus protect its contents.
The action'of my invention may be explained thus:
Any one not acquainted with my device would pull out the drawer, without rst withdrawing the plug F O and inserting the plug F 0'; hence the cover E would accompany the drawer, and the .contents be inaccessible; but a person acquainted with the action of my invention, would first properlyr adi ust the plugs F O and F 0, after which the drawer could be withdrawn without its cover E.
What I 'claim as my invention, and desireto secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination and arifag'ment of the drawer D, cover E, plugs F O and F O', or their mechanical equivalents, arranged and operating substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
' CARLOS L. PAGE.
