PADLOCK ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed December 24" 1907 Serial No. 407.919-
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'SAMUEL E. GLADDING, a citizen of the United States, and residing at Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Padlock Attachments, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to padlocks; and the object thereof is to provide means for holding looks of this class in an inverted position so that rain water will not run into the same when in use and thus rust and destroy the lock.
The invention is fully'disclosed in the following specification, of which the accom panying drawing forms a part, in which the separate parts of my improvements are designated by suitable reference characters in each of the views, and in which Figure 1 is a front view of a part of a door and a door frame, or a part of a gate and a gate post and showing my improvement, part of the construction being in section, and Fig. 2 a side view of the device as shown in Fig. 1, and showing the parts in a different position.
In the drawing forming part of this specification, I have shown at a a part of a door, and at b a part of a door frame and connected with the frameis alatch plate 0, and connected with the door is a staple (Z adapted to pass through an aperture 0 in the latch plate 0. I
have also shown at e an ordinary padlock pro' vided with the usual yoke 6 adapted to be passed through the staple d, andin the practice of my invention as shown in the drawing I pivotally connect with the opposite sides of the casing of the padlock a yoke fwith which is connected a chain 7 which is connected with a rod h which passes loosely into a tubular casing i which is suspended at The rod it within the casing i also passes through a spiral spring 10 which has a bearing at the upper end of said rod and another on the bottom of the casing 'i, and in the construction shown, the rod 71, is folded centrally to form end parallel members, the upper ends of which are formed into hooks k which provide a bearing for the upper end of the spring 7:.
The length of the chain j, casing i, spring is, and the support at 7' of the casing 71, is such as to normally hold the padlock e in the position shown in Fig. 1, or in an inverted position and in this position of the lock rain water cannot pass into the look as it would if the look was suspended from the staple d in the usual manner, and the interior of the lock or the operative parts thereof protected from water and constant rust.
Whenever it is desired to unlock the door, the chain 9 is pulled down as shown in Fig. 2 and the key is inserted into the look at e in the usual manner, and the lock may be operated to release the door, and when it is desired to lock the door all that is necessary is to connect it with the staple d in the usual manner and the spring k will throw the look into the position shown in Fig. 1.
My invention is not limited to the exact details herein described, and various changes therein and modifications thereof, may be made, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A padlock provided with a tensional support which holds it in an inverted position when in use.
ZQA padlock, a yoke pivotally connected with the opposite sides thereof and a tensional support connected with said yoke which normallyholds the padlock in an inverted position when in use.
3. A padlock, a yoke pivoted to the opposite sides thereof, a flexible chain device connected with said yoke, a casing suspended over the padlock, a rod connected with said chain and passed through said casing, and a spring mounted in said casing between the loiger end thereof and the upper end of said ro In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses this 21st day of December 1907 SAMUEL E. GLADDING.
Witnesses:
JOHN F. MoOANN, MORRIS MEYERSON.
