PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
Application filed May 29 1907. Serial No. 376.256-
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. NOURSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Lewiston, in the county of Nez Perce and State of Idaho, have invented a new and Improved Pipe, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention is an improvement in pipes, the purpose of'which is to provide for the collecting of the saliva and nicotin as it passes to and from the bowl, and the easy re moval of the same in cleansing the pipe when desired also to provide for the cutting of the charred tobacco and other collected matter from the bottom of the bowl, whereby it will fall out with the ashes, etc.
I accomplish the above objects by my invention, which, generally stated, consists of a plug having a beveled end with a l0ngitu dinal groove and a transverse aperture passing through the plug at the bottom of the groove. The plug is inserted within an opening formed in the rear of the stem portion of the bowl leading therethrough to the bottom of the bowls cup, at which point the beveled end of the plug is located when the plug is in operative position.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a central, vertical section through a pipe with my improvement applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the plug shown in Fig. 1.
A pipe constructed in accordance with my invention, comprises a bowl 1 of any desired shape or material, having the usual stem portion 2 formed integral therewith at one side, said stem portion being angularly-arranged as is common in pipes of the curved stem type. The stem portion 2 in my improved pipe, however, differs from the ordinary form of pipe in that it is provided with a swelled portion 3 near its bottom, through which passes an opening leading to the bottom of the cup of the bowl. Within this opening is placed a plug shown in section in Fig. 1 and in perspective in Fig. 2, consisting of a conical body 4 having the inner end beveled, as indicated at 5, and its opposite enlarged end provided with a milled-head 6. A longitudinal slot 7 is cut within the body of the plug at right angles to its tapered end 5, which provides communication between the cup of the bowl and the stem thereof. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the location of the plug is such as to cut off the bottom portion of the stem 2 and form an inclosed well or chamber 8 with which the slot 7 in the plug communicates through an aperture 9, the latter pass ing transversely through the plug at the bot tom of said slot.
The major portion of the saliva and nicotin, when the pipe is in use, will collect within the slot 7 of the plug. A part of the same will, however, pass through the aperture 9 into the well 8, where it will be confined. In cleansing the pipe by revolving the plug, the beveled extremity 5 cuts the charred tobacco and other collected matter from the bottom of the bowl which will fall out when the ashes, etc. are emptied. By withdrawing the plug from the bowl, the collected matter within the groove of the plug may be easily cleaned by a match-stem or other like device, and the contents of the bowl 8 emptied through the opening in the rear of the stem portion 2. By this construction it is possible to easily keep the pipe clean and in a fit condition to be smoked.
The invention as shown and described, although being the preferred, practical con struction of the same, is, obviously susceptible of numerous modifications falling within the scope of the annexed claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A pipe comprising a bowl having a stem portion leading from the side thereof, and a plug intersecting said stem portion of the pipe and passing to the bottom of the cup of the bowl, having a longitudinal groove forming communication between the cup and said stem portion.
2. A pipe comprising a bowl having a stem portion at the side thereof with an opening passing through said stem portion to the bottom of the cup of the bowl, and a plug seated in said opening, cutting off the bottom portion of the stem and providing an inclosed chamber, said plug having a longitudinal groove forming communication between the cup of the bowl and the stem, with an aperture passing through the bottom of said groove to said chamber.
3. A pipe comprising a bowl having a stem portion at the side thereof, and a removable plug intersecting said stem portion and passing to the bottom of the cuphaving a beveled inner end operable to cut t e collected matter from the bottom of said cup.
4. In a pipe, a plug having a beveled extremity, and a longitudinal groove with "an aperture passing transversely through the plug at the bottom of the groove.
5. In a pipe, a conical plug having a head formed on its enlarged end, the inner end of said plug being beveled and provided with a longitudinal groove with an aperture passing through the bottom of the groove.
6. A pipe comprising a bowl consisting of a cup with a stem portion at the side thereof,
and a conical plug having a beveled inner,
end passing through the stem portion into thej cup, said plug having a longitudinal groove providing communication between the stem portion and the cup, with an aperture passing through the plug at the bottom of said groove.
7. A pipe comprising a bowl having a stem portion and a plug intersecting the stem portion forming a chamber at the bottom thereof and passing into the bowl, said plug having means providing communication between the stem portion, chamber and bowl.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
