WASHBOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 1908.
Application filed February 21 1907. Serial No. 358.737.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFoNso G. DE WALDO, of Warren, in the county of Trumbull and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in WVashboards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to improvements in wash boards.
The object of the present invention is to provide for wash boards a combined holding and cushioning device capable of retaining the wash board in proper position within a tub, or other receptacle and adapted to yieldably support the upper portion of a wash board in spaced relation with the upper edge of a tub, or other receptacle to permit the Wash board to vibrate, when rubbed either up or down, whereby the hand of the operator is relieved of jars incident to the rubbing of the clothes on the wash board.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, Within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a perspective view of a wash board provided with combined holding and cushioning devices, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged side elevation partly in section. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional view, showing the, arch of the combinceld holding and cushioning device accentuate Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing. i
1 designates a wash board of the ordinary construction, provided at the back at opposite sides of its upper portion with a pan of combined holding and cushioning devices 2, each consisting of a strip-of metal bent or crimped into numerous rentrant angles or V-shaped jaws 3. The crimps or bends are adapted to engage the upper edge of a wash tub, or other receptacle for retaining the wash board in proper position therein. The wash board is prevented from slipping by the crimps or bends, which also permit an adjustment of the wash board for arranging the same in the desired position.
The metallic strips, which extend longituthe wash board to vibrate when in use,
whereby the hand of the operator is relieved of jars incident to rubbing clothes on the wash board. The crimped portion may be spaced from the back of the wash board a greater or less distance, and it may be arched, as illustrated in Fig. 3. The wash board is placed in the tub, or other receptacle with the lower ends of its side bars or legs resting upon the bottom of the tub or receptacle, and the cushioning devices are adapted to rest upon the upper. edge of the tub or receptacle, which extends into one of the recesses of each of the combined cushioning and holding devices. The operation of the combined cushioning and holding devices is not afiected by the thickness of the walls or sides of the tub, and the wash board is relieved of all jar and strain.
What I claim is 2-- 1. A wash board provided at its back with a combined holding and cushioning device extending longitudinally of the wash board and provided with a tub-engaging portion spaced from and yieldably connected with the back of the wash board to space the same from the upper edge of a tub and to permit the wash board to vibrate during use to cushion the hands of the operator, said tub-engaging portion being provided at intervals with means for adjustably engaging the tub to hold the wash board at different angles or inclinations and to prevent the same from slipping.
. 2. A wash board provided with a combined holding and cushioning device consisting of a metallic strip secured at its ends to the wash board, and having an intermediate portion spaced from the back of the wash board and provided with crimps or bends forming a plurality of aWs for engaging the specification in the presence of two subscribupper edge of a receptacle to retain the Wash ing Witnesses.
board in position, said intermediate portion being arranged to yieldably support the Wash ALFONSO DE WALDO' 5 board in spaced relation With the upper edge Witnesses! of the receptacle to cushion the former. GEO. W. UPTON,
In testimony whereof, I have signed this GEO. T. HEOKLINGER.
