Description
allotted www S. R. MIX AND MILO D. WILDER, OF LA PORTE, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 87,865, dated Ma/rch 16, 1869.
INIPROV-ED GRAPI-LE IEOIR TU'BES.
The Schedule referred to these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it concern diana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Grapple for Tubes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof',
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grapplingimplements for withdrawing tubes from wells, the object of which is to provide a more simple and useful implement than any now in use. r
It consists of a pointed rod, having any suitable means for connection to rods for letting it down into the ground', and a-flat tapered grappling-die, of hardened metal, serrated on its tapered edges, which is pivoted in a slot passing through the said pivoted rod, with the widest end upward, and the serrations so formed, that when .it is forced into the upper end of the tube to be Withdrawn, it will bite into the inner surface ofthe tube, and thereby cause the latter to adhere sufficiently to be drawn up.
Figure 1 represents asectional elevation of our implement; and
Figure 2 represents a transverse section on the' line :am of iig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents a pointed rod, of any suitable metal, which may be provided at its upper end with any suit able means for coupling to other rods.
It is slotted transversely above the point, and in the said slot, a flat tapered and serrated grappling-die.B, is pivoted and arranged, as shown in the drawings, the narrowest end being downward, and the serrations so formed in the edges, that, when forced into the end of a tube to be withdrawn, they will bite into the metal, and hold it with suiiicient force to cause it to be drawn out ofthe well.
It is essentialthat the dies B be so arranged in the said slots as to oscillate freely therein, and it is important, also, thatl they be made, in respect to breadth, slightly larger than the bore of the tubes to be withdrawn, and di'erent sizes of dies may be made fordifferent-sized tubes, and, within certain ranges, dies of several sizes may be used in one stock, and for that purpose the pin O may be fixed so as to be readily removed. But for great variations of sizes of the pipes to be Withdlawn, stocks of different sizes should be provided. v
Having thus described our invention,
We claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The improved tubegrappling and withdrawing implement, composed of the tapered stock A and die B, arranged substantially as andfor the purpose described.
