IMPROVEMENT IN PIPE'AND .BOLT-GUTTER.

T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, GEORGE B. KIRK, of Newarkjin the' county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and improved Pipe-Gutter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full', clear, and exact description thereof', whoh'will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specication, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of 'my improved cutter with Va removed section.
Figure 2 is a side view, the reverse of that shown at fig. 1
Figure 3 is a detail view of thercutter-stock.
Similar-letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to the cutting of pipes or roda, and consists of a stock containing ajcuttingtool, which is made to traverse around theV pipe, and thereby out a section ofthe same at right angles to the axis.
T he pipe-cutter heretofore in use was that of J. E. Stanwood, patented April 29, 1859, in which a cutting. wheel was made to revolve with its edge in contactl with the pipe or ro'd. The use of this invention is attended with certain disadvantages, one of which being the compression of the pipe at the section cnt, wherebyit has fallen into disi'avor, and in thc manufacture of' tubular boilers, where such an implement would, if unobjectionable, be generally employed, its use is discarded altogether.
My improvements obviate the objectionable features -of the above-cited invention, and furnish a portable tube or pipe-cutter which'is practically successful, without compressing the pipe or tube, as aforesaid.
In the drawings, A is the stock, having an angular recess, a, as shown. The claw B is provided witha screw-shank, b, which passes through the guides C C, forming part of the stock A. A screw-thimblc, D, having n. hollow thread which lits the scrcw-shank b, enables the clawB to be adjustedito diiferent-sized pipes' or rods. A rectangular opening, E, in the stock, is partially filled by the tool-holder G, the edges of' which are V-sba-ped, .to tit within the corresponding V-shaped sides of the opening E. A removable plate, t, forms part of the opening, and its removal permits the entrance of the holder G when' the implement is being put together. This tool-holder is further provided with aslot for holding the cutting-tool QZ, as shown, and a' setserow, e, for clamping the latter irnily. The cutting-tool projects fromthe holder G- into the angular recess, as shown, whereby its point will come in contact with the pipe when the latter is in the grasp of the stock A and claw B.. The handle I serves to turn the implement around upon thepipe, and while so turning, the tool d takes out a. thin cutting, which escapes through the slot n.' This slot is of especial importance, for without it, or some equiva lent outlet,V the Cutting would curl up and get between the grasp ofthe stock and the pipe or rod, and thus hinder the action oi' the implement. The shank Z ofthe handle I works within a hollow screw formed in the stock, for the purpose of withdrawingthc tool-holder Gand its cutter, or actuating the same against the pipe o r rod; and to accomplishthis end it is.i`ormed with a. flange, z', as shown at tig. 'A pin,- g, issecured in the holder G, below this flange, whereby the former is made to follow the screw-shank lwhen the same is withdrawn. When actuating the cutting-tool toward the pipe or rod, the flange'abuts-directly against the holder, as will be obvious.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A1. The cutting-tool d, consisting of a fixed steel cutter, pointed substantially as 'shown and described, in combination with the screw-shank Z, stock A, andv adjustable claw B, all'constructed and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The flange z' and pin g, substantially as shown and described, or other equivalent device, when in oombination with the holderA G, stock A, and cutting-tool d, for the purpose set forth.
3. The slot n, substantially as shown and described, in combination with the cutting-tool d and' stockl A, all as set forth.
' GEORGE B. KIRK.
