`3 Claims.
This invention relates'primarily to a portable power or hand driven machine for threading pipe, in which a standard type of ratchet die-head is employed, as shown in U. S. Patent No. 1,966,124; and more particularly to a die-head of the selffeeding type, where the cutting die is fed to the pipe in a positive manner.
In die-heads of this kind, the body is rigidly clamped upon the pipe which is also rigidly held in a pipe vice, and the die-head in which the cutting dies are mounted is threaded into the body of the tool in such a manner that as the di-e-head is rotated by the action of a handlev operated ratchet, the die-head will travel inwardly within the body causing the cutters to have a positive lead and not depending upon the thread that is being cut to force the dies or cutters upon the pipe.
The objection to this automatic feed is that it does not have any stop or throw-od when the required number of threads have been cut on the pipe, and when such a die-head is employed in the power operated machine as described in U. S. Patent No. 1,966,124, if the operator is not present to stop the machine or to change the ratchet feed to neutral, the die-head will become jammed in the body and the threads may become damaged as well as the cutters.
To overcome these and other objections and to provide a die-head that shall have an automatic feed together with a stop to render the feed in. operative when the proper length of thread has been cut, we have devised a novel die-head or attachment for the usual types now in use.
The object of the invention is to provide a diehead of the self-feeding type having automatic means for stopping the self-feeding means when the desired number of threads have been cut.
Another object of the invention is to provide a stop for a self-feeding die-head that may be incorporated into the device or be in the form of an attachment thereto.
Another object of the invention is to provide a die-stock of this kind that may be operated by hand as well as in a power driven machine.
With these and other objects in view, our invention consists in certain novel construction and combination of parts as will hereinafter be fully described and claimed and further illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof and in which like figures of reference refer to corresponding parts in all of the views, and it is understood that slight changes may be made Without departing from the spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing:
To fully understand the operation and advantages of the device, it will be necessary to describe the construction and operation of the usual type of die-stock, which we have illustrated and which comprises:
A tubular body portion Ill formed with the flange II within which are adjustably mounted the pipe clamps I2 for rigidly securing the body i6 to the pipe i3, which, of course, is also rigidly secured in the usual pipe vice (not shown in the drawing) the pipe clamps or shoes I2 are mounted on the inner ends of the guide rods I4 which are slidably mounted in the walls of the ange I I, and the shoes I2 are operated by the thumb bolts lwvhich are threaded through the walls of the flange I! and are rotatable within a plate i6 secured to the ends of the rods I by a screw Il, so that by the rotation of these bolts I5 the shoes I2 are clamped on the pipe I3.
The upper end ci the body portion Il! is formed with an internal threaded portion I8 for the external threaded portion I9 of a tubular flanged member 20 having the internal threaded portion 2|.
Between the upper end of the body member IEI and this flanged member 2Q is freely rotatably mounted the ratchet ring member 22 which is provided with the handle socket 23 for the handle d4 and the ratchet boss 24.
This ring or operating member 22 has a central opening 25 embracing the anged member 29 which is flanged as at 26 and rotatably mounted within this flange 26 is a ring 21 formed on its periphery with ratchet teeth 28 and adapted to be engaged by a ratchet 29 for operation in either direction according to the way the ratchet 29 is set by the finger knob Sil by pulling it out against the action of the spring 3I to turn it; accidental turning being prevented by a transverse pin 32 adapted to engage the slot 33 in the boss 24; this ratchet ring 2 is held in the member 22 by the flanged member 20 and a retaining ring 34 secured in the operating member 22 by the screws 35.
The cutter head 36 has an axial bore 31 for the passage of the pipe I3 and a depending eX- ternally threaded body 38 threaded into the bore 55 2| of the flanged member 20 to constitute the feed.
The upper face of this cutter head 36 is formed with the usual holders 39 Within which are adjustably mounted in the usual manner, the cutters 40.
To prevent rotation between the ratchet ring 2 and the cutter head 3B, a set of posts 4I are provided which have their inner ends rigidly secured to the ratchet ring 21 and which extend through bearings 42 formed in the cutter head 36 allowing the head 3S to freely slide on said posts 4|.
As the ratchet ring 2l is rotated by the handle 44, the cutter head 36 will be rotated on the pipe i3 to cut the threads 45 and at the same time the threaded portion 38 engaging the threaded portion 2| of the member 20, will act as an automatic feed for the cutter head 36 on the pipe I3, but should it be permitted to enter too far into the member 2B, it will become jammed.
To prevent this and provide an automatic stop for the feed We have provided the handle socket 23 with a boss 46 within which is threaded a stop bolt 41 the height of which may be varied and locked by the nut 48.
To the face of the cutter head 36 is secured a stop arm 49 by the screws 50, or this arm may be integral with the head.
When the operation of threading the pipe I3 is started the cutter head 361 is backed out of the anged member 20 to its full extent, and as the feeding action takes place, the arm 49 will freely pass the stop pin 4l, but when the required depth of thread is attained, the arm 49 will contact with the pin 4l and prevent further inward movement of the cutter head 36 and thus any further feed.
The next backward or oscillating movement cf the ring 22 by the handle 44 will back the cutters on the threads already cut so that any further oscillation of the die-head will only oscillate the cutters on the already cut threads and will not continue the cutting operation.
Having thus described our invention, what We claim is new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. An automatic and adjustable feed stop for ratchet operated threading die-stocks of the class described, comprising in combination With a diestock having a body member for attachment to a pipe, a cutter-head threaded therein toform a feed and ratchet means for rotating the cutterhead, of an arm carried by the cutter head and an adjustable stud carried by the ratchet means adapted to contact with said arm when a predetermined length of thread has been cut to prevent further rotation between the cutter-head and the ratchet means.
2. An automatic stop for the feeding means of a ratchet operated thread cutting machine having a non-rotating body, a die-head threaded therein to provide a feed, and a ratchet operated means for rotating the die-head upon the pipe and with respect to the body, of means for limiting the travel of said feeding means, comprising an adjustable stop mounted upon the vdie-head rotating means and an arm secured to and projecting from said die-head and adapted to contact with said stop when the feeding means has completed a predetermined length of travel.
3. In a thread cutting die-head having a ratchet handle and in combination With a non-rotating body member having a die-head threaded therein capable of in and out rotary travel with respect to the body member to provide a feed, of a stop adjustably mounted on said ratchet handle and an arm secured to said die-head and adapted to contact with, and stop the inward travel of the die-head with respect to the body member when a predetermined length of travel of the die-head has been reached due to its in and out rotary travel.
